It was questoinable as to whether he was shielded (by GL or Alloy).
Now, I actually believe that he wasn't shielded and that he -did-, in fact, survive.
But I don't believe that he hurt Superman.
Ah.
GL sheilded him from the blast at the end. We don't know if he could have survived it, since Superman did, but Alloy didn't.
Alloy tried to shield him but definately didn't do it fast enough. At the point of the explosion, Alloy is pretty much on all fours with Magog underneathe him. This leaves the space of about a house free for the blast to hit Magog. So pretty much, he got the full brunt of it.
As for weather he hurt Superman...eh, not so much. Still, he did as much damage as anything did to Superman, save maybe the lightning. I mean the same blast that tore apart Alloy and killed 90% of the Justice League, 90% of the Outsiders, and 90% of the "criminals" just pissed KC Supes off.
He looks roughly in the same condition after that blast as after Magog shot him, except more angry.

Thats my point. We don't really know how powerful Magog is considering he never damaged Superman. However, that isn't saying he is weak. Superman wasn't hurt the entire series, so saying Magog couldn't do damage Superman isn't saying much. Its not a testament as to how weak Magog is, but a testament as to how powerful KC Supes is.

Don't forget that many of the "heroes" of the new generation fear him. He is besically the new Superman.
Supes looked stunned because Magog just shot him. If I were Supes, and I was talking to Magog and he just shot me, I would be pretty stunned, too.
Now, even though his invulnerability aura covers his suit, that doesn't mean that just because his suit was damage he was. The blast could have just gone deep enough into the aura to slightly damage the suit (which it seems as though that was the case, as his suit was barely damaged and his skin or any part of his actual body wasn't).
His (very little) exposed flesh would have been damaged slightly as well. And I don't think Supes would have been too surprised at Magog shooting him. Remember, Magog is the dude who wanted a title bout with Supes.

This could just be me reading into things too much, but I noticed that before Magog blasts stuff (when he's just pissed off), the gem in his helmet turns red. Maybe the blast is partially effected by his mood? Or maybe it was just a lame tell built into his gear.

If the blast is partially effected by his mood, then by the time he attacks Superman, he's basically given up on life, so the blast would be weakened. Of course, this argument is based on very little and is entirely academic, especially since the voting on this one is closed.

Team magog will win. Anyone who can put a scare into superman is no joke and the black queen is even more dangerous (all dressed up like that - yummy!).
