Great figure for the points back than and now (a little moreso back then, but still good today).
Love how the tanking DV at the end of his dial can work to his benefit more than as a negative, as, really, whether it's 8DV or 13DV, at this point in the dial he's equally likely to be a sitting duck; but with the 8DV, he's so easy to get a successful support roll on that the only reason you'd even need to roll for it was to see if you critical miss.
This is just about the most awkward dial imaginable... immensely powerful up front with an absurd attack potential, but then with a calamitous decline to defense numbers so low we've never seen them again. While he's no longer very scary if you can base him or even hit him once, he's still like a big bazooka you can point and shoot and hit just about anyone.
I happen to like Firelord in all his incarnations, even in today's game, because he's just so destructive that even if injured he can take important shots. The Pulse Wave at the end is pretty funny - I've seen it make a difference unexpectedly.

He's a medic's dream: a massively powerful figure who, when he does get hit, has an impossible to miss defense. Throw the cheapest, stupidest medic down next to him and let Firelord carry them around, and I guarantee you will get knocked off of and come back to that first click at least twice before he goes down. Amazing figure, if outright broken.
Insane, even today. Play him with Elite Sniper, add a Ruling-Caste Dominator, a Night Nurse with Invigorate, and an Indigo Lantern special object for 235 pts total. That's even leave room for a TK or something else, as you like.

You know everyone loves to be the villain. Hugh Grant
Soon someone will look this guy's way. The Galactus from Galactic Guardians breathes new life to this figure. The "My Herald" trait and functional Herald dial mechanic is just too comic accurate to pass up.
