Today I was playin a friend and he had vet rouge and vet magneto btb. Anyway, I had super skrull(attack 11)and I rolled and 7 using Explosion on rouge(def only15) and hit rouge for no damage but when it came time for mag. to take his splash damage, my friend said that becuz he had range def.(19 with ranged def) I missed. Now is splash damaged counted as btb are ranged. Does ranged def make a differnce when applying splash damage?
EE: You roll the dice once, if the roll is successfull against the target of the attack then splash damage occurs.
You then compare your original dice roll to all the figures in splash range. You have to beat the defense value for each figure in order for the attack to hurt them.
Since it is a ranged attack then all ranged defenses will apply, ie Energy Shield, Hindering Terrain bonus.
Energy Shield/Deflection (from the PAC) Increase this character's defense value by 2 versus ranged combat attacks that target or can effect him/her
Energy Explosion definately falls under the category of a ranged combat attack that can effect Magneto, even though he wasnt the target of the initial attack.
I'll try to clear it up a bit better (its too early to make that much sense tho )
Quotes from the PAC:
Energy Explosion: This characters ranged combat attacks can effect all figures in squares adjacent to the target.
Energy Shield/Deflection: Increase this character's defense value by 2 versus ranged combat attacks that target or can effect him/her
So:
1 EE is definatley a ranged combat attack.
2 ES/D will increase defense for all ranged combat attacks that effect the character.
That any clearer?
You mentioned that because Rogue and Magneto are b2b then it shouldnt be ranged combat. But remember since Magneto is a flyer there will be many instances of him being attacked with ranged combat when he is b2b with the enemy.
are we sure abt this? I only ask because super senses and impervious doesnt work against energy explosion when the splash characters have them. So, say you hit magneto and catwomen is next to him, she takes damage w/o rolling her super senses.
Also, in addition to Tsannik's. Energy Shield works against splash, but hindering terrain does not. The splash doesn't involve LoF, and so the hindering modifier never comes into play.

I'm curious how this was arrived at. I haven't done an exhaustive search, but what I see in the PAC is, "Make only one attack dice roll; compare that result to the defense value of the target character and every character in a square adjacent to the target." At first glance it seems if an adjacent fig is in hindering he would get the +1. The DC FAQ provided me no further enlightenment.
By definition, the hindering terrain modifier is applied when LoF to a character crosses hindering terrain. EE splash, however, doesn't involve the drawing of LoF; adjacency is all that's needed for a figure to be eligible for splash damage before the dieroll is compared against their defense.
