Well the first thread got a nice positive response, so I figured I'd give the January chart a shot. It's a little late, but Diamond fudged the numbers so they're a bit late. Anyway, lets get on to the numbers.
As usual, much love and credit to The Beat for doing the real work. Also, click on the publishers to get a detailed breakdown of the numbers and comments that are a lot more insightful then mine.
Now, I'm not saying DC had a horrible month, but they got kinda crushed. It's what happens when you go up against multiple major releases at Marvel and all you've got is a weekly series that's slipping every month. But they try, right? Doesn't that matter?
Justice League #17 — 94,712
Countdown to FC #17 — 69,587
Countdown to FC #16 — 69,629
Countdown to FC #15 — 69,504
Countdown to FC #14 — 68,770
Countdown to FC #13 — 68,099
Nothing over 100k this month. Justice League is kinda steady, but still several thousand units short of that. Big sellers like JSA, and the All-Star titles all missed January so the next highest selling book is actually Countdown which is nearly 30 below Justice League. Ouch.
Batman #673 — 69,234
Detective Comics #840 — 51,579
Nightwing #140 — 32,305
Robin #170 — 30,048
The Resurrection of Ra's al Ghul worked well for every title involved but Batman itself. I suppose the musical chair game Morisson is playing with his plots is becoming a little annoying, especially when a crossover joins in. Still, at least Nightwing, Robin, and Detective Comics are enjoying a nice increase.
Green Lantern #27 — 67,600
Green Lantern Corps #20 — 44,607
The Sinestro Corops had a similar effect for the Green Lantern titles except it managed to benefit all the titles.
Superman/Batman #45 — 52,119
Fun fact: Superman/Batman shipped in January for the first time in four years! Well, I thought it was fun...
Wonder Woman #16 — 42,897
Flash #236 — 41,464
Supergirl #25 — 36,459
Wonder Woman, The Flash, and Supergirl are all in a race to the bottom. With Flash getting Geoff Johns, it'll probably stop the bleeding. But shouldn't Gail Simone be helping Wonder Woman? If it gets below Supergirl then I think it proves the lack of justice in DC. Unless it's in league or society form. (It's a shame they removed negative rep, huh?)
Y: The Last Man #60 — 28,434
Y: The Last Man had a nice boost for its final issue. A great series gets a nice send off sales wise.
Revelations #1 of 6 — 11,694
Revelations #2 of 6 — 10,877
Also, I'm curious, does anyone here care about the WildStorm universe? If so, you need a few more thousand people to buy those titles or else they'll be gone again. Until DC decides we need them back and they get canceled again.
Marvel wins big time. But much like a homerun record won with the use of steroids, is it truly a clean win? There are 7 titles pulling in more then 100k in sales.
Hulk #1 - 134,002
The Hulk put up some big numbers in spite of the fact that Jeph Loeb is on it. From what I've heard, it actually doesn't suck. Maybe these sales will convince Loeb to do more of that.
Amazing Spider-Man #546 - 127,958
Amazing Spider-Man #547 - 101,213
Amazing Spider-Man #548 - 97,959
Brand New Day kicked off to numbers that were...below the usual sales of Amazing Spider-Man. Well, technically the first part sold better then the last part of One More Day, but OMD somehow picked up more orders in January to pull ahead. Apparently a lot of people have a masochistic urge to read that comic. Technically BND is a huge success when you consider the poor sales of the other Spidey titles, but we'll see how that works out in the long term as a first month bump was expected. It looks like Mephisto was really thinking of us when he offered Peter that horrible deal. I guess that makes us accessories to the devil, doesn't it? Now I know how the snakes feel.
Captain America #34 - 127,626
Hey, people really wanted to see Bucky as the new Cap, huh? It sold by the boatloads. Considering Brubaker's run on the title, this is the first clean 100k+ book for Marvel. If only it could always sell this well.
Uncanny X-Men #494 - 105,520
X-Men #207 - 104,793
New X-Men #46 - 82,658
X-Factor #27 - 81,350
All the titles in Messiah Complex went up for the last part (not counting reorders) which means that people are really enjoying that story. I couldn't quite finish it due to my budget, but it seemed like a cool story. It's nice to see a solid X-Men story though.
Ultimates 3 #2 of 5 - 105,070
Ultimates 3 had a nice large drop, but it's still in the territory range of the previous Ultimates which is still way too high. I can only hope there's a mass exodus from the title and I hope Marvel enjoys their ill-gotten gains. I'd tell people to burn their copies, but who knows what type of evil spirits are sealed within those pages. The least we can do is buy less in the hopes that Marvel will stop producing so many.
Mighty Avengers #8 - 84,459
Mighty Avengers takes a drop as Bagley joins the book for an arc. Does this mean people want it to ship late or something?
Hercules #113 - 73,533
Hercules is taking over Hulk's book forever (according to Marvel, so that's about six months) and sales are pretty good. Considering it's Hercules. I hope Pak gets some credit for that as he rocked the Hulk stuff not too long ago.
Ult. Spider-Man #118 - 58,800
Ultimate Spider-Man is losing readers which is bad news as it's the top selling ultimate title that isn't pure evil. With Jeph Loeb en route to "save" the imprint, I think there are darker times for the Ultimate universe ahead.
New Exiles #1 - 43,853
Big boost for New Exiles. If you people keep buying Claremont's books, he's still going to keep writing them! Let that be a lesson to you!
Initiative #9 - 55,270
Thunderbolts #118 - 43,645
Both The Initiative and Thunderbolts are dropping quickly. The later most likely due to all those months missed that are plugged up with filler one-shots. It looks like in the future those filler books will be part of the main title. Maybe they could just, you know, not use filler at all and get it back on a monthly schedule. Just an idea.
Onslaught Reborn #5 of 5 - 39,083
Onslaught Reborn slips back into the dark void that can only spew out hatred in comic book form. Our souls are safe...for now!
Moon Knight #14 - 34,569
Nova #10 - 29,397
New Warriors #8 - 28,926
Ghost Rider #19 - 28,566
Ms Marvel #23 - 24,260
She-Hulk #25 - 23,283
Marvel Comics Presents #5 - 17,426
Looks like Moon Knight, Nova, New Warriors, Ghost Rider, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, and Marvel Comics Presents are all in deep trouble. Especially MCP which is almost guaranteed to be canceled by issue 12. One quick look at the handful of titles that have tie-ins to Secret Invasion will show that about half those titles are involved. And so several books that people don't want to read will be forced into their hands as they try to follow a crossover that is far too large to be considered coherent with so many titles being jammed into it. The system works.
Also, to the folks buying Ultimates 3, when you decide you want to switch to a good comic, give Nova a shot. For some reason it probably won't have anything to do with Secret Invasion (Skrulls in a cosmic series? Madness), so it needs all the help it can get.
That about wraps it up. I think I was way more surly then I intended to be this time around. I didn't make any canceled/on the bubble lists this time around as most people know The Order, JLA Classified, and JSA Classified are all supposed to be on their way out. It's also hard to guess what's next on the chopping block with major crossovers on the way and several titles in-line to get a boost to the life support they thrive on. Anyway, hope you all had fun.
I'm actually waiting for the trade of MCPs (That reminds me, I sill need to get some Marvel Team-up TPBs). I loved the old series for all the small tales of Marvel's less glamerous characters. Is Wolverine the main story again? I kinda hope not. Too bad it's selling so low.
I hope more people pick up Nova. It's good. I wish Maleev would do the interiors as well once Pelletier leaves for Guardians of the Galaxy. Also how did Annihilation Conquest do?
I've also been enjoying Herc.
Thanks for posting another one of these. I know that I'm always interested.
As far as the books and their numbers:
Any increase for Detective is nice to see as that book is really quite good.
I'd love to see the GL books rise in numbers, but they're doing okay for what they are. I love the GL's, but I recognize they'll never be in the top tier of sales.
I'm with you in hoping that Gail's name will help Wonder Woman's sales.
I'm not surprised that the Hulk's sales were huge for #1. I imagine they'll stay that way for at least the first 4-6 issues with the whole "who is Red Hulk?" really driving the sales. I will be curious to see where the numbers go after the Red Hulk mystery is resolved though.
Cap deserves to be selling that many copies every month. It is just a great, all-around quality book.
As far as the Mighty Avengers, maybe people just prefer Cho's artwork?
As one of the (apparently) few who read Ms. Marvel, I will miss this book when it's gone. And the sales certainly seem to that happening sooner rather than later. :disappoin
Thanks for the nice work in this area. The numbers on some books are startaling and numbers on others are lower then I would have imagined. Like Red Hulk for example... at my venue there are acouple of people who bought it just to see what it was going to be about and then really liked it and is going to stick with it. Nova is the one that surprised me by far. that's one of the best new series IMO for a long time. I hope it dosn't get canned.

The two anchor stories this time revolve around a detective accused of a murder that somehow links to a group of heroes including Blade and Dominic Fortune, and the other one is a story involving the new Guardian in Omega Flight. With stories like that, it isn't too surprising to see the title floundering.
Annihilation Conquest #3 of 6 - 30,089
That isn't as bad as it sounds considering the characters in the title.
