The League closed in on Prometheus, surrounding the villain and coordinating their attacks toward his capture. It was not going well - he seemed to be in several places at once, and thanks to his solid-light holographic projector, that was indeed the case. Black Canary delivered a series of kicks to a man that didn't exist, falling hard when an unseen fist connected with her jaw. Wonder Woman dodged punches and Batman slipped from the shadows to duel with the man who had mastered as many forms of unarmed combat as he had. Only too late did they discover they were actually fighting each other, cloaked by Prometheus' holograms.
Superman should have been able to use his vision to see through the fakes, but the kryptonite was having a devastating effect on him. Parasite had been slowly leeching his strength the whole while, and as he now tried in vain to pin down Prometheus before he could escape with Luthor, punishing blows from a kryptonite-studded fist brought him closer and closer to collapse. Between the radiation sickness, the pain of exposure to the lethally toxic stones, and the strength Parasite had drained away, the Man of Steel was having a hard enough time just keeping his vision clear.
"You won't get away with this," he said, trying to buy time and project a confidence that was starting to flag. The sweat rolling off his increasingly pale face wasn't selling the drama.
"I already have," came a voice from behind him. He dodged as fast as he could, which was still more than enough to escape the lunging uppercut from Prometheus. Only too late did he realize he had been set up, as bands of steel lurched around him and brought him to the floor.
"Here," Prometheus said, letting a chain dangle from his hand to reveal the large, diamond-cut piece of kryptonite attached. He tossed it casually and Dr. Polaris ensured it draped around Superman's neck.
"A parting gift," the villain laughed. Steel tore itself up from all round the room and shot out to ensnare the rest of the League. Red Tornado pushed back with torrents of crimson wind, but his own body was laced with enough metal to make him an easier target to subdue. He was pinned and crushed to the floor before he could compute the change in enemy tactics.
Wonder Woman was strong enough to break free, but it wasn't fast enough. The villains were stepping through a new teleportation doorway and disappearing beyond, and she had to get the Kryptonite off of Superman and away from him as fast as possible. Batman leapt from where he had slipped his bonds and nearly landed a strong kick on Prometheus, but the villain was able to sidestep it with seeming ease. Spinning to stay engaged with his target, Batman threw a single straight punch that came within centimeters of connecting with the other's jaw, but centimeters weren't close enough.
"No!" Aquaman shouted, twisting madly in his bonds, the steel girders groaning and rending as his muscles raged against their confinement. His eyes were wild and hair disheveled from his struggle. With a guttural scream, he threw his arms wide and exploded from his prison, chasing after the villains who had almost all passed through the portal. He reached out to grab Black Manta's fading body but his fingers found only air as the midnight-suited villain vanished through the golden portal. With a rush of air, the portal closed and they were gone.
Aquaman screamed again, his muscles tense and his fists clenched in frustration and anger. He whirled on Batman who stood calmly and watched.
"How could you let them escape?" the King of Atlantis demanded, stalking toward Batman. "You had a shot and you missed completely, now he's out there free!"
The Dark Knight just glared at him. "Calm down, Arthur. You aren't helping anyone. Your anger won't get you any closer to Manta.".
"He killed Mera!" he shouted. "He killed my child! And you let him get away from me!"
"No," Batman said. "I didn't."
"Orin, please," Wonder Woman said, taking his shoulder. "You can't let that man have such control over you--"
"I'll be calm when he's back in Atlantean custody where he belongs," Aquaman said, pulling his arm away from her. "You people can't seem to build prison cells that work for a d#mn, so I'm through leaving this matter to human hands."
"That isn't your decision," Batman said.
"It's for the international courts to--"
"No! I left it to them before and now he's free. I trusted this team, and Batman missed his shot. There's no trust left to be had."
"I didn't miss," Batman said, eyes narrowed and voice cold. "I never miss."
"What are you talking about?" Aquaman demanded. He was going to press further, but a beep came from Batman's utility belt and he took out a Justice League communicator.
"I'm reading you, Dr. Palmer," Batman said, answering the call. "Are you in?"
"Oh, I'm in," the voice of the Atom replied quietly, as if whispering. "I hope you guys are ready to back me up, because I won't be safe here for long."
"We're ready as we're going to be. Bring us in, Doctor."
"You planned all this," Wonder Woman said. It wasn't a question. He didn't bother to reply. "Atom is with them, now, and will use the Satellite's teleporter to send us wherever they are."
"Could be a trap," Green Arrow said, limping toward them with the help of Black Canary. "And we haven't done but a couple field tests of the focal-point teleporter. The thing could miss us and 'port somebody else-- or send us into the side of a mountain or something."
"The conditions aren't perfect," Batman agreed. "But it's the last thing they'll be expecting."
"Batman's right," Superman said. His breath was coming in ragged drags through pained lungs and he looked like a man recovering from a lethal disease. But despite his pale, sweaty skin, sunken features and limp hair, his crystal-blue eyes burned with intensity and purpose.
"You aren't coming," Batman said.
"Yes. I am. And we're going to rescue that miserable excuse for a man, put the rest back in prison - and give the Atlanteans a voice in Manta's fate."
"Are you sure you're strong enough?" Wonder Woman asked. Her tone betrayed no disrespect for the man's ability, though her concern for her closest friend was clear. "Prometheus may not expect us to attack so soon, but he will be expecting an attack. And he still has the Kryptonite gauntlet…"
"You need my strength and there's no time to bring in backup. I can take whatever they throw at us, and even if the best I can do is draw their fire then it still gives the rest of you the opening to save Luthor."
"Fine," Batman said with only slight frustration. "But it has to be now or we'll miss our window."
"Give the signal," Superman said, drawing himself to his full height and, with a deep breath, regaining most of his composure. With that one breath, he was Superman again.
"On my mark, Atom," Batman said into the communicator. "…Mark."
With a flash, they were gone and Lex Luthor's private office was empty as a cold wind blew through the Metropolis night.
