HCR Rates The Movies Is Back! Come and share your thoughts on a TON of films, new and old! Our latest movie - BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE
(as always, click the above Movie Title to view its Trailer)[/b]
As always?
Anyway, I have never seen this movie and I think it isn't anywhere near as much of a staple here as it is in the US.
As I just found out it was dubbed only in 1973. I'll keep my eyes open to see if it's shown around Christmas time.
(While I try to catch up with the movies rated here it's not easy to get them. Today I purchased Unusual Suspects, but buying a movie - more or less solely for the purpose of giving my rating here - will be an exception rather than the rule.)
EDIT: Hah! I just saw that the whole movie is available via google video. I'll watch it in the next couple of days.
Yep, I think all of our RtM movies, besides the Action/Adventure section, have links to their trailers (via youtube) now. Click on their Movie Titles on the first post to see.

My favorite movie of all time. I love this film, and it is Jimmy Stewart's best performance.
I've never made a secret of the fact I love a lot of old films, and enjoy a lot of the old film stars. This film is one of those reasons.
No sex, no profanity, low violence, and no political correctness ####. It is a well done, well acted, well thought out story about a man who thinks he's worthless.
I love this film. 10/10 (yeah, a rarity for me)
"Un-fun Dad, un-fun Dad,
He's so bad, he mak'a me mad
Un-fun Dad, un-fun Dad
He's a real cad, Un-fun Dad"
It's kitsch, but that's okay during holiday season.
I didn't like that the matter with Mr. Potter wasn't resolved, though. It'd have made the happy ending happier if the bad guy had been busted.
To me, this is one of the most inspirational films ever done. As already stated, no violence for violence sake; no "dirty talk." It's got some great scenes; Jimmy Stewart's defining role (next to Mr. Chips goes to Washington.)
Just a simple story about the good one man can do; and how that one man effects the life of everyone around him. In many ways, we're all George Bailey. We dream of bigger things, and sometimes we need a reminder of what makes us special to the world around us.
This is a film I think is what Christmas is all about. That through caring and doing for others, our lives our fulfilled.

9/10. Aside from superb acting by Jimmy Stewart and a good plot this movie is a must see. This movie shows that some times we need to think about what means most to us and to be happy with what we have. And of course, every action has a consequence (good and bad). My only gripe is the length.
Yeah, this movie is a classic. There isn't really anything comprarable to it. If it weren't for Cowboy Bebop, this would probably be my favorite movie of all time.
10 out of ten.
Eh . . .
I have no sekrets, I just am.
Want to see me strip, sing, screw up my lines, and dance for my senior year spring play? Then check this out!
Anyone *really* pay attention to the events of this movie? I know that it's trotted out as a holiday favorite, but under the patina of George gadding about with angels, you're left with Mary (Donna Reed) holding the strands of George's life together through sheer willpower. She's the girl that he leaves behind on a number of occasions, but she's always there to pull him out of the fire when things get rough.
When there's a run on the savings and loan, Mary first implores George not to investigate, as she knows (far more than George) that this will be their one and only shot to get out of Bedford Falls. George ignores her and charges off to confront a mob of shareholders, but it's Mary who ponies up their honeymoon cash to fund the savings and loan. Then (this is the same day, remember), Mary heads off to enlist all of George's friends to help her prepare 320 Sycamore for George's arrival (how she managed to purchase the place is a mystery that's never revealed, but George obviously had no part of it). So in one day, Mary has saved the Bailey family business *and* found a place for them to live.
Fast forward a few years, and there's Mary (in the cutest little outfit) welcoming the Martinis to their new home, while George seethes away in frustration at his lot in life. From his jealousy of Sam Wainwright to his continued inability to "shake off the dust of this crummy little town," George is a poorly controlled ball of rage. He blows up at the kids, he threatens teachers, and he responds to adversity by getting sauced up and wrecking the car. What does Mary do while George is off having his alcohol-fueled vision quest? She puts out the word that George is in trouble and passes the hat. Clarence might have solved George's spiritual malaise, but Mary cleared up his very real personal and financial crises by watching the kids, working the phones, and wiring Sam Wainwright.
And how does this kind of resourcefulness play out in the "George-less" world Potterville? Mary is a swooning old maid who spends her evenings closing up the library. We're supposed to believe that this is the woman who, in her youth, would have accompanied a young man home clad only in a bathrobe while singing "Buffalo Gal"?
All of this doesn't detract from my enjoyment of the film, and watching it is sort of a tradition in my family (there's quite a bit of vocal interaction with the movie, though - much of it directed at Uncle Billy). I give it a 9.5.
But as far as no dirty talk: "He's making violent love to me, mother!"
yeah, I know they didn't mean it the same way....
And Hail, I think the dark stuff about George is important-- yeah, he's a good guy, but the movie focuses on his failures and personal shortcomings for a reason-- to give hope to us schlubs in the audience.
