but seriously, folks. zombie, black lantern, sentient corpse with bad breath and a penchant for witty banter, whatever you want to call them, it's a pretty great story so far. zombie flying graysons!?!? yowza! that's some deep schnitt for nightman or batwing or whatever he is now to have to deal with.
GEEZ LOUSIE! ITS A COMIC BOOK! stop taking it so seriously and enjoy the flying ventriloquist (i wonder if he's gonna have trouble reciting the black lantern oath. "the glackest night falls from the skies")
only if He has his scarface do it.
Probably'll have wesker recite it

And again I'll say it's not that specific book that was 3 years in the making, it's the entire storyline that is going on. The corps wars, Hal looking like he is going to be a savior of sorts, the guardians looking more and more like villians, just everything. You base your judgement on one comic book - maybe try to not dive in at the very end and then judge an entire story line on one book? That might make too much sense though I guess. That's like saying "I just read Secret Invasion #1 and wow they planted seeds for that story long ago?!?! Doesn't seem like it!!!! Oh wait I have no clue because I picked up the story at the very end"
See that's the funny part: Secret Invasion DID give the impression they'd planned everything for over 3 years and was executed better over the course of the first issue. Naturally it all fell apart by the end but up until the midway point SI was an incredibly interesting read. Blackest Night so far? Not so much. Definitely there is more to BN than just the emphasis on the Black Lanterns but after 2 issues it certainly doesn't show at least in the main book. Here's hoping things pick up.
So far I've got no complaints...but then I've been reading GL since Mr. Raynor took over so I've seen all the progressions/plots/sub-plots leading up to this point. It is essential to understand how each "color" represents an emotion/need (and has strengths and weaknesses against various other colors)...and that the "Black Lanterns" seem to represent not just death, but loss - there seems to be a motive to these zombies that is beyond the traditional "eat brains" or Marvel's "spread our zombie virus and feed". Hence why Dove did not "zombify" because he was at peace...there is no "loss/regret/etc." for the black energy to grab in him - the key to defeating the Black Lanterns will come as the heroes figure out how to help the Black Lanterns deal with their loss or embrace the Black Lanterns and fulfill their need.
I will point out that the slow start is a lot of how Johns does things...look at the "Thy Kingdom Come" series in JSA...it took a WHILE for the "action" to begin, but the plot was constantly evolving. I've liked almost everything Johns has done at DC (hated Legion of Three Worlds...THAT was disappointing, and I really am sick to death of Superboy Prime - and making HIM the Time Trapper...LAME)...overall though I am more than willing to see where Johns goes with this storyline.
I will agree that Countdown and Final Crisis were disappointing...but no more so than say:
Civil War (The only explanation I have to how bad this was is...let's infect all of our main characters with some kind of mental illness so they act TOTALLY out of character)
Secret Invasion (hi, we're an advanced alien shape changing race that can perfectly duplicate ANY super being and we are looking to take over your planet...so we infiltrate by kidnapping and replacing the weakest heroes before we attack to take over the planet - yea, that's a good strategy - I don't want to go on and on about this, but SI could've/should've been SO much better - for example: as the invading/shape changing aliens...let's take over world leaders - to make our invasion go smoother...let's be the ones behind the destabilization of the heroes so our invasion goes better...once we infiltrate with the losers, let's infiltrate and take out some of the big guns so we don't have to deal with them...seriously...SI was stupid - and I'm not even gonna comment how sick to death/dumb "Dark...Whatever" is...)
Ultimatum (WOW was that read a waste of my life I can't get back, it was so bad/unnecessary I don't even want to really talk about it).
I think what DC is trying to do is now that they've decided they want to be a multiverse again they've got to define themselves as a universe/company etc. and I believe that Blackest Night is how they are going to get back to their core.

Y'know I was thinking about this after I got an actual night's sleep and wasn't posting at midnight...
To expand on the "Black Lantern" concept...since black is the absence of color (in the actual light spectrum) the idea of the Black Lanterns having to do with loss/something missing makes even more sense...
Which also leads to...could we see a "White Lantern"...in the actual light spectrum white light is the combination of all colors...and so far Hal has been recruited/possessed by virtually all the colors (I can't remember off the top of my head if he's done the purple/sapphire color yet; but given the GL cover in the latest previews it would not surprise me if he went indigo soon)...I can see a potential resolution to the story where Hal becomes a "White Lantern" to counter the "Black Lanterns"

The Issue with that is all the building up has been in the Green Lantern Comics, Have you been Reading Green Lantern and GLC since Rebirth?
Make no mistake this is a Green Lantern Event that being spilled into the rest of the DCU.
Most of the Stuff not about Black Lantern Seems to be covered in GLC.
For Example this weeks issue of Corps saw the Formation of the Mongul Corps, As Mongol invaded Kurugar
