I will continue to run the events as I have during the hiatus.
WK used to call them "Unrestricted" with either Scenarios or occasional build restrictions not based on sets.
Created participation prizes will be given out. I hope I can run a few sealeds and drafts but will have to check player interest or the willingness to get the store to throw in some incentive to pay-to-play. Its the uber-suck having a very active venue and not get any prizes (or more importantly maps). To go from hosting Pre-Releases to getting jack-squat blows.
Hopefully when B&B comes out we can get a prize pack to help the store move some product. If so, what I enjoy doing is making the tournament somehow reflect the prize being offered - otherwise I default to current comic-stories on the shelves. Did a Dark Avengers and Blackest Night scenario already. Gonna have to do a Siege one eventually...
Visible Dials and Pushing Damage need to be optional. This is the way.
We're taking the HoT OP kit suggestions into account, but mixing it up a bit when it comes to scenarios and point builds. the judge plays if we have an odd number of players, so nobody has to take the bye (we only have time for two games as it is). Unrestricted, but people hold back on the total cheese.
In addition to the HoT OP prize support, we also have some older LEs/uniques and open a few boosters to create a prize pool. First place gets first choice from the prize pool; second place gets second choice; and so on. The person who comes last gets two choices and then we go back up the list. The LEs/uniques come from a stash I have at home (collected during the hiatus), and we chip in $5 each to buy the boosters.
This gives everybody a chance to take home something they like from a tournament, even if it isn't the new LE. It works really well with a set like HoT, with more generics in the mix.
