Anyone else been checking this Boom Studios series out? I wasn't really sure what to expect when I first started reading it, but I'd enjoyed Live Free or Die Hard well enough, and seen a couple good reviews of the first issue, so I gave a it a try.
Funny thing, part of the reason I started picking it up was because I thought was a mini-series for some reason, which help me swallow the $4 price tag. I thought that after issue 4 last month, that would be the end of it.
So it was my surprise to find that on the shelves today was issue number 5. Now, considering that I wasn't expecting this to be a longer series, and the higher price for it under the circumstances, it had me hesitating to continue on with it. But in the end, I decided I'd see what happens next.
And boy, am I glad I did. While the first four issues were ok, with McClane being a rookie with his training officer. However, it wasn't anything exceptional, the end of the arc felt a little like a miniature Die Hard story (as in the plot of the first movie), and McClane himself wasn't as fun a character.
However, since he got promoted at the end of that issue, #5 was a LOT more fun to read. McClane reads a lot more like I remembered him, his partner is more enjoyable than his training officer, and the story itself was more fun. If the series continues more like the latest issue and less like the first four, I think it should be a nice little indy series to keep up with.
Pretty well wishing the series had started from this point, since I have a feeling the lackluster storytelling of the first arc had something to do with where McClane had to start from, though I suppose it just wouldn't be right if a story like this skipped over that part of his career.
i read the first issue and i was pretty disappointed with it for pretty much all the reasons you mentioned. it kind of felt like john mcclane was a side character. but now i'm interested in it again. i believe i'll give this book another shot.
Yeah, if you just skip the other issues you haven't read yet, start over with issue 5, and pretend it's actually issue 1, I'm guessing you'll probably get a better "first" impression. I'd almost go as far as saying that the first 4 issues felt like they were part of a different series anyway just by the way they were written.
