I won this special object (a light object) this past weekend at my local venue and it had me thinking allllll the way home (I live an hour + north of my venue).

I was playing in an 800 Modern Age tournament and ran, arguably, my most $ expensive team ever.

Since I wasn't playing when these figures came out I had to purchase them on the open market, ergo expensive.

I was 40+ points under the cap and really didn't think I would stand much of a chance. But two JLI teams, an Apokolips team (Darkseid was target #1) and another mish-mash of BatB figures (Extant and Shazam led the way there) later and I won.

So when given the choice between Checkmate ATA and the Yellow Lantern I shrugged and grabbed the lantern.

All the way home I kept thinking about Superman Prime running around ranging people with it. Devestating! As long as I avoided Melee combat this little beast of a 5 point object is scary.

Imagine Ms Skrul-Vel running around with it. Scary enough as she is imagine all her damage being penetrating and she gets +1 to her AV. Granted anyone with 4 squares of her (while she is holding it) deals penetrating damage and gets the +1 as well but...man.

Have I just missed the discussion on this object or is this thing not as cool as I think it is?

I think you misunderstand. It doesn't make your damage penetrating, but ups your AV is you have PB/EW.

i have. id rather pick up mjollnir with the Ted Knight Bystander. Or better still- Adeline Wilson, Henry Peter Gyirch, or Amanda Waller Bystanders for willpower with that range.
