OK, so all I know about this game is that I played a demo of it at GENCON 2009 and thought it seemed neat. I recently bought the Voltron game (cause I am a Voltron freak and would've bought it regardless if the game sucked or not) Recently my young son has been watching a ton of old Horror movies like Godzilla, King Kong, The Blob and LOVES them.
What I was hoping to find out is what is the best place to begin? What do I need for 2 people to play? (I was thinking I would just get the Rise starter, but now see that says only enough for 1 player) What sets are best to focus on if my goal is to recreate the good old fashion Monster destroys everything old movie type feel? Would it be best to wait for the new Two-Player Battle box to come out? (I see it is a preorder item at MiniMarket)
The upcoming 2 player battle box will be the best way to get two people into the game, ready to play, out of the box. The Voltron starter you have actually does that well, too, and in some ways is a better starting experience because it contains only a few units, and only 2 different kinds of units. You could start out using the hyper forms of both Voltron and Lo-Tron, saving the morpher figures for after you've got a good handle on the rules and basics elements of the game. Most everything about the Voltron set is intended to be a starter set...aside from the morpher figures. They are a little more complex than a standard alpha form would be.
When the 2 -player battle box comes out, you'll be fully ready to take on 8 different kinds of units (4 different units per side) and normal alpha/hyper monster pairs, plus a decent city to build.
Take a look at the monsters from all the factions and find one or two factions that appeal to you visually. Start picking up figures from those factions. The game is very much geared towards faction play, so picking up particular factions is a great way to get started.
If you have Voltron then you've already got a start on a couple of Agendas (Agendas are umbrellas over certain factions... right now there are two factions per Agenda). Voltron is a Protector. The factions under Protectors are GUARD and Elemental Champions. Lo-Tron is a Fiend and the factions under Fiends Agenda are Lords of Cthul and Subterran Uprising.
