Wow. I hate, hate, hate voting voting against true classic rock Fleetwood Mac. But my first exposure to this song was the Rockets' version. And, despite the fact that it is 1/3 the length of the original, the Rockets version seems more complete.
Rockets cover
May all your hits be crits!
On the whole, human beings want to be good — but not too good, and not quite all the time. - George Orwell
I had never heard of the Rockets before, or if I have, can't remember them, but they whupped up FM on this.
Rockets
I actually wanted to nominate "Desire" from the Rocket's LP No Ballads for the 80s TOC, but it was one that had to be culled. One of my all time favorites, nothing soft on the entire album. If you just want Detroit Kick It, here it is:
I had the great pleasure of seeing Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels play in Central Park, before Mitch jumped on his "Sock It to Me" line and rode solo. But OMG, what an incredible band they were (Mitch's aping of James Brown aside) --- due, in no small part, to Jim McCarty and Johnny Bee.
Much as I loved Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac...Holy Crow, hearing this song by The Rockets with McCarty and Bee, well...oh well, indeed.
The Cover -- The Rockets, please!
Tim Burton was right: "A square jaw does not a Batman make." Steve Buscemi as the next Batman! Luke Perry as Joker! Let's make it happen!

Whoa! Never got to see Mitch Ryder or The Rockets, and can only imagine the energy you experianced! Congrats! I got to see Cactus before McCarty left, so at least did see him.
I was just looking on Wikipedia, and found this- "In 2009, a new band, the Hell Drivers were created. The members are Jim McCarty, Johnny "Bee" Badanjek, Marvin Conrad (bass), and Jim Edwards (vocals). A high-energy band, they play a variety of Dertoit rock'n'roll from Iggy, The Rockets, Mitch Ryder, Bob Seger and more to great critical acclaim." Haven't heard them before, but am going to check them out.

"High-energy" is right. "Jenny Take a Ride" was a terrific single and seeing Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels perform it on some TV show sealed the deal for me. I remember thinking, though, that somehow, their two LPs on New Voice just seemed to fall flat by sounding a bit sterile.
Later, I would have similar feelings about Big Brother and the Holding Company. To me, they were two high-energy bands that just lost something in the translation to a 33 1/3 rpm record.
I saw both bands perform live and they were INCREDIBLE in concert. Too bad that wasn't captured to better effect on record (though Big Brother's "Cheap Thrills" on Columbia certainly came closer than the first LP on Mainstream).
Good to hear that Jim McCarty and Johnny Bee are still rockin.' What are the chances of a reunion with Mitch, I wonder...?
