Okay, the Zappa cover didn't turn out nearly as bad as I feared when I first opened this thread - or as bad as I feared it was when Frank started talking. But its still a pale copy of the original. Allman Brothers, ftw.
May all your hits be crits!

It's not going to be often that you can say any two guitarists bettered the Allman Bros duo of Dickey Betts and Duane Allman, but that's what happened here with Frank and Dweezil Zappa churning out a more jazz oriented flavor over the original's more blues rock formula. In this battle, I'll take the cover over the original.

You'll never hear me agree with that!

Then it a matter of taste. Blue rock or jazz flavored? It depends on the day. Coin flip goes to Allman Bros. today. But tomorrow could very well be different.

I love the Zappa cover. Never heard it before, but if I hadn't been loving the original for over 40 years, could easily have given it a vote. As it is, my vote has to go to the Original by The Allman Brothers.
Think I will go sit and play my Bongos In the Dirt.
I love the original. When VG9 posted this in the "What are you listening to now" thread, I was amazed at how good FZ version was. Love it. So, with that said, I'm going with Frank Zappa.
If it wasn't obvious earlier, my vote goes for the original.

Well, after having been blown away, I think I've recovered sufficiently to address this particular O vs. C.
Holy Crow...what a great recommendation, VG9 --- and thanks VERY much for presenting this clip of Frank Zappa, who, I must tell you, is on my short list of underrated guitar players.
I happen to love this track by the Allman Bros.
But, my gosh, the cover here is....a mind blower for me.
I'm with VG9 all the way on this one!
The Cover -- Frank Zappa, please!
Tim Burton was right: "A square jaw does not a Batman make." Steve Buscemi as the next Batman! Luke Perry as Joker! Let's make it happen!
