Great idea for an O vs. C, so my hat's off to you, Mr. G!
Much as I love The Beatles, I'm glad ELO got the nod here for the cover, because with all due respect to Chuck Berry -- and he gets a heap of it from me -- I happen to LOVE their version.
That said, I agree with David Letterman that if anyone deserves to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at this point in time, it's Paul Shaffer. When it comes to good music -- playing and promoting it -- he is a national treasure, IMHO. But apparently, he does not meet the Hall's eligibility requirements.
Shaffer and his band recorded the song presented here for the soundtrack of the pooch film, "Beethoven," and if you'll indulge me, RE, here it is, just for the halibut.
If this match was a game of darts, ELO would have missed the board and gotten no points. To me, this song is all about capturing an essence. Something so purely simple that it speaks to anyone who wants to know what the beginnings of rock were all about.
Chuck spoke to a whole generation of rebellious teens and he captured the sound with rockin' guitars and a voice that still resonates.
Glad you all approve of the choice. (Well, not VG obviously, but the rest of you.) Yeah, I could've chosen the Beatles, but they didn't do that much to differentiate it from Chuck Berry's. ELOs is a much bigger departure. I do like them both as well, but my love for the oldies means that if push comes to shove, I'm going to give Chuck Berry the vote.
While I appreciate the status and stature of the original, ELO is my favorite group of all time and their full on rock opera version of Chuck Berry's classic is one of my favorite ELO songs.
Chuck Berry didn't realize that he was writing that song for Jeff Lynne and company at the time, but he was.

*Takes nice comfy pillow, puts it under him and slowly sits down*
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Uh, don't mind me. I just pulled that dart out of my tuchis --- the one that got away from Jeff Lynne (or maybe Bev Bevan was responsible for the errant toss) and missed the board but registered some points with a buttocks bull's-eye just the same.
Tim Burton was right: "A square jaw does not a Batman make." Steve Buscemi as the next Batman! Luke Perry as Joker! Let's make it happen!
