1st- try not to be adversarial toward your judge unless they've been unjustifiably adversarial to you first.
2nd- if your opponent can 'suicide bomb' you when time is called, it stands to reason you have the same opportunity in other games. Just remember it and use it as part of your tactics. It's the 'sudden death' moment, and it gives the player who goes second some form of consolation for always being behind in actions.
3rd- My venue does the 'finish the round' technique too. The idea is that each player gets the same number of turns in a game then. I find it fair and balanced. The last minute push for points is all part of it, and once you get used to it you'll find it's a frantic, fun moment in games.
This is how my venue runs things as well. I love it, it feels very even no matter who started the match.
It's all a question of which you find more 'fair'. A player running out time when just one more turn would let their opponent win, or a player taking a desperate last shot that they might not have taken otherwise in an attempt to win.

This is indeed true. No system will be perfect.
I do remember one game I was judging that had an epic outcome because of the "Full Round" rules I was using.
The game was far more interesting for both player because the player had to make a choice about pushing and possibly to his KO click on his last action.
While some people might think thats outside the scope of the game. I remember the tension and feel of the moment was very much HeroClix to everyone who was watching.

My venue lets the active player finish the action they are on, or if no action has been declared they may declare ONE single action. Its basically one last chance to attack an opposing piece.
