Situation:
I'm playing a 300 point team with two 100-point Sentinels, Moon Dragon, and 2 Con Artists.
I have Moon Dragon positioned on elevated terrain, at the corner of a roof.
One of my Sentinels is standing on the ground, next to the building, in a square adjoining (but not adjacent to, due to the elevation difference) Moon Dragon.
Moon Dragon wants to make a ranged attack against another ground level figure (Deathbird) in her range. The Sentinel is standing on the ground between the elevated Moon Dragon and grounded Deathbird.
Question:
Can Moon Dragon attempt a ranged combat attack against Deathbird, or is the Sentinel blocking the LOF?
I know the new rules state that an "attacker on elevated terrain can make a ranged combat attack targeting a grounded character as long as the only blocking terrain the line of fire crosses is part of the square the attacker occupies. Line of fire from an elevated attacker is not blocked by grounded blocking terrain or other characters, unless the terrain occupies the same square as the target."
The venue judge (having a different opinion) stated that since a Sentinel is not a standard "character," and since (according to the Sentinel rules) it's "large size means that standard characters do not block line of fire to or from a Sentinel. Sentinels do block line of fire to and from other Sentinels. Sentinels and characters on elevated terrain can fire on each other as if they were on the same terrain level," that I could not make the shot, since the Sentinel large size would cause it to be in the way.
Would the Sentinel follow the new rules as a "character," or would different rules apply for this specialized piece?
If different rules do apply, could Moon Dragon still make the shot?
Have their been any formal rulings on this, or is it still just a matter or interpretation?
The thing to remeber here is the very last line under attacking:
Quote
All other rules for line of fire remain the same.
Nowhere under the Sentinel rules does it say that the Sentinal blocks LOF from elevated characters to grounded characters (and vice versa), so the Sentinel does indeed not block LOF from an elevated character to a grounded character (as per the rule book).
Keep in mind that this may change when the overhauled Sentinel rules come out (scheduled out 11/17).
Truth be told, I don't know how far reaching it will be. My guess is that it will mostly re-define the rules for the new rules set. It will probably be things like defining capture attemps as either power or combat actions, re-defining how the multi-attack works, things of that nature. They may also re-define the LOF issues. This is a speculation on my part though.....
Leave the Sentinels be. They are not broken, only under used. I feel a big shackling coming. Buy a thumper of a figure and then have the THUMP cut out of it. TK in to walls for damage, throwing opponents, and the no-ranged form soaring rules need revision then. Heck just rewrite the whole book while at it.
