I showed up at a tournament with an alter ego figure. I had the alter ego character on his card on the sideline when I revealed my force. My opponent said I couldn't use my alter ego figure because of a rule in the rulebook which states all players must agree on the maximum number of replacement figures in each sideboard. He chose to have the maximum number as zero. The judge was not sure how to rule this so I had to play without the alter ego. Surely there must be some ruling against this because it essentially takes away an entire game mechanic. If anyone has any information on this it would be most appreciated.
Certain game effects will call for a character to be replaced with one or more other characters on the map. When assembling your force, you identify these replacement characters although they are not yet on your force. Replacement characters’ point values are not added to your build total. All players should agree on the maximum number of replacement characters allowed per force.
That said, in a tournament a Judge can set the limit. Usually 3 for every 100 points to a maximum of 15.

That line in the rulebook is for when you and captain dink decide to play a game on your own. For organized events the following from the Tournament Rules generally would apply.
2.6 Replacement Characters: Whatever replacement character policy the event will use should be available in the event description. The default replacement character limitiation is 3 per 100 points of the build total, with a maximum of 15 replacement characters per force.
Players don't then get to overrule this any more than they get to overrule any other rules laid out specifically for a given event.
After showing the judge the response on here, he admitted to making a mistake and I was awarded 20 dollars in store credit for the mix-up. Thank you everyone.
