As a long-time Marvel fan that just used to read DC once in awhile, I have to give you my honest opinion on something.
Since the New 52 relaunch just over a year ago, Batman and Justice League have kicked the pants off any Marvel title over that timeframe in my opinion.
Amazing Spider-Man has been good but it's ending next month. I read all of Avengers vs. X-Men and all the crossover tie-ins and they were ok (over now) but not on the same level as the new main Batman and Justice League books.
I've loved Marvel for a long time and truly believe that with the X-Men franchise alone they should be able to dominate the comic industry. The sad truth is (in my opinion at least) that DC has just kicked their a$$ over the past year (in comics, not in movies obviously). Marvel is attempting to relaunch and rebrand many of their titles right now but so far I've been left wanting. It seems to me that instead of adapting the movies to the comics that Marvel has begun adapting their comic characters to be more like their movie characters. This seems backwards to me.
I'm sure that there will be plenty of Realmsers who vehemently disagree with me but at least wanted to put it out there that you should consider giving Batman and Justice League a chance. The primary Green Lantern title is reasonably good also.
If you're going for trade paper backs, I'd say Joss Whedon's run on Astonishing X-Men is a must buy. Brian Michael Bendis' run on the New Avengers was also quite good. I've heard Rick Remender's Uncanny X-Force was also stellar. The Dark Avengers - if you can get past the art - is also very good (but if you dislike Norman Osborn or the Sentry, pass on it). Avengers vs. X-Men was seminal in the way it changed the Marvel Universe but it was/is controversial. Wolverine and the X-Men is a great comic but it got bogged down in the AvX non-sense so TPB 3 and 4 will require a basic knowledge of that event to understand what is going on. The Invincible Iron Man was really good as well but the art takes some getting used to.
If you're really looking for brand new comics, then, well, everything is up in the air with Marvel NOW!, which is a total creative reorganization of every comic Marvel produces but (unlike the New 52) is not a reboot. Uncanny Avengers sold like gang busters. The All-New X-Men looks like it will be a huge hit but it's hard to say with just one comic (#2 comes out tomorrow).

In terms of sales, DC dominated the top 10 best selling comics since the New 52 launched. Marvel's only saving grace has been AvX, and even then DC still dominates.
Batman has been the best title in the New 52, by far. It is full of action, suspense, mystery and fun. The other Batman titles are hit and miss. Batman and Robin is great, Dark Knight is good if you like chicks that run around in thongs and Detective Comics is pretty dark. The other Bat Family books are hit and miss as well. Batwoman rivals Batman in terms of quality. Batgirl and Nightwing are about what you expect. Red Hood and the Outlaws is unspeakably bad. Talon is brand new and looks like it will be pretty darn good. Action Comics has also been particularly good but many would disagree with me. Supergirl has been a sleeper hit, while Superman has been a disappointment. Green Lantern and Green Lantern: The New Guardians are the best of the Lantern comics (with GL just squeaking in ahead of GL:NG, IMO). Flash and Aquamman have also been surprisingly good.
Uncanny X-Force contains some of the best X-Men stories I have read in 10 years. This is of course, with the exception of Joss Whedon and John Cassaday's Astonishing X-Men. Both books are brilliant.
Avengers Disassembled, New Avengers vol 1-5, House of M, Seige and AvX are all Avengers related stuff worth picking up. I also really liked the first two volumes of Mighty Avengers and, just regular "Avengers" by Brian Michael Bendis.
I highly suggest you check out Warren Ellis run of the thunderbolts if only to see Norman Osborne drop the ultimate line "smells like blondes, death, and victory while sniffing his original goblin costume.
