"GNnnnaaark!" barked the enormous Armadillo that Damage was wrestling with. The huge mutant animal was like a living tank, and had even managed to catch Power Girl by surprise. It's heavy biological armor and dense muscle mass let it withstand her retaliatory blows, then put her down on the ground.
Well, Damage wasn't about to just stand by and let it eat her! Or whatever it was going to do. He had leapt onto the monster's plated hide and wailed away with his fists, but he wasn't making much of a difference, apart from distracting it from finishing off Power Girl. Great, now what?
"Woah! ...Wooo-aaahh!" He whooped, clinging to the beast as it decided to charge down a random corridor of the Cadmus lab. A cluster of Cadmus guards were scattered like bowling pins as it barrelled past them. Superboy, no longer ringed by the highly trained security team, leapt into the air and chased after the wild animal and the teenager on its back.
"Have you tried rubbing its belly?" Conner quipped to Damage, matching speed with the mutant armadillo and hovering in closer.
"Pretty sure its not looking to be anyone's pet," Damage answered back, his voice rattling from the animal's gallops. "Do any of the cages still work?"
"The one with the monkeys!" Superboy said, even as they passed within sight of the last intact containment unit. He would have to release them in order to get the mutant armadillo inside, but a handful of playful monkeys couldn't be any more dangerous than this angry beast, right?
"Right!" Damage agreed, lacking any better plan. A firm punch to the side of it's thickly armored head convinced it to turn, and Superboy flew ahead to the cage. A quick telekinetic nudge sprang the lock open, and the screeching pack of simians inside scrambled out to freedom. They had only cleared the cage by seconds when the blindly stampeding armadillo rushed inside and crashed against the far wall. Damage hurried off its back and out of the containment chamber, so that Conner could reactivate the lock. With it sealed inside again, both teen boys breathed a sigh of relief, and gave each other a quick high-five.
"Superboy," Conner introduced himself.
"Damage," said the teenager, and gave his brow a quick wipe with the back of his forearm. "Did you get captured by Cadmus too?"
"No, I came in with Power Girl... ohcrapola, Power Girl!"
A flash of realization struck both young heroes, suddenly realizing they had left the lovely and temporarily defenceless heroine alone in the midst of ever-widening carnage. Would she be alright? And more importantly, who would be there to receive her thanks when she regained consciousness? Damage and Superboy sped off through the chaotic battle, each determined to be the first to reach the damsel.
Superboy, having the advantage of flight, naturally won the race. But when they arrived they found Power Girl being surrounded and sucked under by the bizarre red ooze that had slowly been spreading throughout the facility. In a flash of anger Superboy grabbed at the stuff, his tacticle telekinesis lashing at it and making the amorphous red tentacles retreat, their movements seeming to suggest pain.
"Kara, are you okay?" Superboy asked. Power Girl slowly regained her senses, her fluttering eyelashes catching Conner's attention. Damage tromped up behind him, more cautious of the ongoing firefight between Cadmus and the invading Intergang forces.
"Yeah... yeah. Thanks. God, I hate tentacles!" Power Girl hissed.
As happy as she was to be rid of the red blob, she could see it wasn't just going to disappear. Like the bats, the snake creature, and now the pack of chimps, the red slime had found the exit and was squirming quickly towards its freedom.
"Uhg... we gotta go catch that thing..." Power Girl decided with an annoyed grunt, pulling herself to her feet with an eager hand from Damage. The conflict between Cadmus and Intergang was important to be sure, but it was at least contained here underground. Up above there were vulnerable civilians... bad enough that mutant bats and snakepeople might have gotten loose, but this red gunk could threaten the whole city if it kept growing like this.
