If someone mind controls a character to attack an opponent with the Mystic team ability, who takes the backlash damage? My gut tells me its the direct attacker, but I am not sure. Thanks.

Yes. Mystic TA deals damage to whomever makes the attack against them.

The Werle is correct, the attacker (the MCed character performing the attack) takes the Mystic retaliation. A strategy point, team abilities are optional. So you can turn off the Mystic ability so it doesn't hurt your own character but it will stay off for the remainder of the current turn.
