Some characters are marked with a symbol on the character base. These characters are Improved and can use certain abilities that make it easier for them to move and/or draw line of fire. Check the character's card for more information.
If the character card has a little stick figure man, that symbol is referred to as IM for brevity from here on, that character has some form of Improved Movement. Different symbols (including colored squares, circles, and other icons) follow the IM to tell you exactly what kinds of Improved Movement the character can use. Here is a list of the symbols and their function:
■ Ignores elevated terrain.
■ Ignores hindering terrain.
■ Ignores water terrain.
■ Ignores blocking terrain.
■ I Ignores indoor blocking terrain.
□ Ignores outdoor blocking terrain.
■ Ignores blocking terrain and destroys blocking terrain as the character moves through it.
● Ignores characters
○ Ignores opposing characters
oo May move through squares adjacent to opposing characters but still needs to break away normally.
oo> May move through squares adjacent to or occupied by opposing characters but still needs to break away normally.
Some other game effects, like powers, combat abilties, or relics, may also allow a character to use IM. In those cases, they use the same symbols as listed above.
Can I counter Improved Movement?
Yes. Improved Movement is a combat ability and can be countered the same way you would counter Flight, Indomitable, or any other combat ability that can be countered.
So do I counter each little colored square? Or will countering Improved Movement knock out all the little symbols?
The combat ability is Improved Movement, not each little symbol after the IM symbol. So one single use of Outwit would knock out all Improved Movement.
Since there two different symbols for hindering terrain and water terrain (■ and ■) does that mean IM ■ characters can't move through water?
No. Water is hindering terrain for movement purposes. Anything that would let a character move through hindering terrain, including IM ■, will also ignore water.
And, before you ask, the reason there are two different symbols is because some characters can ONLY ignore water, and not all hindering terrain, for movement. Characters with the symbol, for example.
