The fun things they could do with barrier alone in an evangelion set is enough to make my mouth water. But there would have to be a trade off for the psychological flaws the characters have. Do you think Earthbound could be tweaked to represent crippling angst? Could Shinji get a trait where he wastes a turn curled up in the fetal position crying?

It would be a trait. All his actions give him 2 tokens. And he wouldn't have indomitable.

Trait: Crippling Weak Psyche: Shinji can use perplex. Whenever Shinji would be given an action, he must be given two action tokens. If Shinji did not start this turn with two action tokens, he may instead not clear on his next turn to use a free action.
