Ok in another thread a young man asked about getting into the game and it turned into a debate. So I figure this could be helpful to new players. The rules are kind of like the X-Wing ones with the lack of a needed ship.
With $100 and buying a starter kit you must help a new person buy enough to play with 2 100 point factions, if you can do 3 that is awesome but work on 2.
The ships should be playable and not because they are "kewl". What would make it enjoyable for play and challenging. No LE pieces or resources. I have just walked into the door and I need to get it off the pegs.
Magic is not for Parlor Tricks~
Sparrow, Moros Second Degree Master
Depends on the faction and the style of play. Some people like to use cloak others do not.
Starter 40, with 15 for each expansion. Hmmm... Romulan Valdore, Praetus, USS Defiant, Klingon NeghVar.
That would get you three factions, heavier on the Romulan but the upgrades from the expansions should do well for you. You also could do a cloak fleet with Defiant, Valdore, NeghVar.
(assuming the same pricing you mentioned in the other thread)
$40 - Starter
And then 2 expansions for which ever 2 factions you choose to play out of the 3 in the starter.....as of the Wave 1 release....
Federation ($30 total)
$15 - USS Defiant
$15 - USS Enterprise
Both give good options, the Enterprise mostly for the awesome Crew and Elite talents....and Kirk is going to be the best Captain in the game when more Elite Talents come out......the Ship isn't a heavy hitter though. The Defiant gives the Federation a cloak and potentially the most powerful single ship weapon in the game (Quantum Torps) the crew are also quite good. And lets be serious, with the starter this is 3 of the 4 shows most people will be familiar with. (sorry Archer ). The Scenario the Kobayashi Maru is also recognizable to many people and it's a fun challange.
Klingons ($30 total)
$15 - I.K.S. Negh'Var
$15 - I.K.S. Kronos One (although I would go with the Wave 2 I.K.S. Koraga, that was just previewed, if that was available)
The Negh'var is the big ship for the Klingons and comes with arguable 2 of the most important captains for them (Martok and Gowron).......Kronos Ones gives the Klingons it's first rear firing arc, is a bit more solid than the Gr'Oth......but like I mentioned up there, the Bird of Prey (I.K.S. Koraga) is the ship I'd get if it were an option....to me the BoP is the Klingon ship.
Similar to the Klingon's Negh'var, the Valdore is the big ship for the Romulans and comes with one of their most important captains (Donatra)....and adds in a co-op scenario for up to 3 players. Now there are no medium ships in the Romulan Empire right now but the Praetus is the more combat capable of the 2 small ones in my opinion. Some people like the Valdore so much they would get 2 to start with...but if you're looking for diversity and options I'd go with the Praetus....it also has a good captain and some key upgrades (Cloaked Mines and Polarized Hull Plating)
It is almost upon us! Are you prepared for the Quarmageddon?
Traitorarmor that was what I was looking for well and thought out.
Happy to help when I can.

Do you think it would be worth buying 2 Dominion ships and try to run them at 100 points?
I wouldn't suggest it to start with, for sure.
A lot of the comments about the Dominion so far have been that it's the weakest of the 4 starting main factions (stemming from not getting a ship in the starter, and being a ship down in comparison).
And while the 3 ships they currently have access to are decent they don't have the big umph that people are gravitating to the Romulans and the Klingons right now. They are potent though......I would say it probably takes more skill to have the Dominion ships compete right now.
That is my answer right now.
This Wednesday we are going to be getting the preview of their next ship, the Koranak, and it's supposed to be quite the release.
I would imagine that the Koranak +2 Dominion Expansions would be just fine though.
Also 3 ships seems to be the sweet spot many players are playing early on (combination of # of ships, and amount to upgrades) are making.....so planning for having to load up 2 ships, while do-able, IMO would not be ideal.
