Canadian Men won Gold playing the best 'team defence' that I have ever seen.
They were fast and aggressive in the offensive zone.
They were fast and aggressive in the defensive zone.
They smothered everything that every team did.
They had the offensive talent to "run and gun" and score more goals.
But they decided the best way to win was to completely shut down teams
for the whole game, and score when their talent allowed then to.
They had the best group of 7 defencemen that has ever been assembled on one team.
The current Norris Trophy winning defencemen was only the 7th d-man, and couldn't get ice time.
Price played lights out in every game he played.
People had worries about the goaltending, but Price and Loungo were awesome.
And every single forward was very skilled AND hard working.
Even "lazy" players like Nash played their butts off, killing penalties,
and letting the Head Coach roll 4 'equal' Lines which kept players fresh.
Speaking of Coaches, the coaching staff and Management Team was by far, the best of any country.
This strength is usually under-rated by many people.
But they are the beginning of making the perfect team.
Smart money was on the Canadian team.
Before the tourney even started, it was clear to see that they were the best team.
The American mens team was very good - until it counted.
Under intense pressure they could not score.
In their last game they basically gave up.
Folded. Choked.
( they were extremely lucky to beat Russia in the Round Robin )
The Canadian women won Gold in dramatic fashion.
For 57 minutes they were snake-bit and didn't get any lucky breaks.
It is hard to score when the puck never bounces your way.
But they didn't give up, and their pressure paid off with two goals late in the game.
People can talk about bad refs or bad penalties, but the calls were even and fair.
The Canadian women seem to be happy to let the Americans win the World Championships,
while they continue to win Olympic Gold the last four times.
Canadians are all happy about that.
Olympic Gold is what it is all about.
Another interesting tidbit:
I think this was the first Olympics where the same country won Gold in Mens and Womens Curling.
