I wish I could of afforded a Makerbot, I remember when they used to offer a $500 kit, but alas they have moved on and were purchased by Stratsys. They still offer an affordable printer in comparison to other rapid prototype systems, but I had $350 and not $1300 ( which is what their cheapest printer is going for ). But I have very little regrets, as putting together the Printrbot simple has educated me greatly and I have been pleasantly surprised by the quality of its prints.
Who knows though, maybe I'll come up with a design that I could sell and make enough to buy Makerbot's Replicator ($3k).
Honestly, the picture you posted seems better than what Makerbots do at that scale. I think it's a waste to invest in 3D printers for this scale of figure at the moment. Yours is the best I've seen for an affordable price. About how much of the material does a figure like that go through?
I'm trying to figure out if I should get one . At the moment I have a pretty sweet deal where I can use somebody else's super high end printer, but it would be neat to have my own because $350 is totally acceptable.

Well a spool has about 330meters of filament, according to my g-code the clix sized figure took about a meters worth of filament. A spool of PLA filament is $30, so the fig cost me just under a dime to print. Though I had to print it out about 3 times to get the size / quality I wanted so about 30 cents and around 2-3 hours of printing.
Man...seeing these pics makes me really want to get my own 3D printer. But I'd want one with a bigger print capacity...just because. But all the ones I've seen and am interested in are over $1k. Which is too much for me to spend on something that would be a novelty. But man...if I ever become friends with a millionaire, I know what I'd ask for on my birthday...
Well printrbot just today released an all metal version of the printrbot simple for $600 pre-assembled and it looks AWESOME. It has a 6x6x6 print area which increases on the wood version by 2", plus it comes with auto alignment software for the bed ( which was my headache for a day ). Though the version I have does have a kit that would allow me to increase my print capacity to 4x7.25x6.5 for only $130.
Though it's unfair to call it a novelty, I haven't gone a night with out having the printer on for at least 4 hours and I've already come up with a couple prototypes that I'm considering starting a small business with.
