it's a thing that started from john brynes run on superman from the 80's for like long distance time in space like a few weeks or a month he weres it in case of situations come up like they did in the war world episode, because even though he is superman it has been made that he DOES need to eventually breathe....hence the suit....short hops forget it.....
Once again John byrnes take on a character leaves them in worse shape.....

Oh ok so it's not really needed except for long exposure. That makes sense. It's always bugged me though, like when they just go up into space to go into that fortress they have up there.

Superman doesn't need a suit for small trips... But, even Superman needs oxygen eventually. That's why the suit. Not to mention speaking to the rest of the team. And the suit itself is a holdover from the Superman Animated Series... essentially the same design established there.
