10/10
This movie is the conclusion of 5 other movies, it was not suppose to be the character definitions of of all major carachters, but the climax action ending of phase one. And in the end, it nailed what it was suppose to be.
Absolutely enjoyed it. Only thing I can say: Robert Downey Jr IS Tony Stark. I pity the actor that tries to pick up after he leaves......
9/10 (a few unresolved questions... most important one: Who the h#$% are the Chitauri? I've only read Marvel 616 so I had no clue.... but I did recognize Thanos.
Edited to add: FLGS Comis fan pointed out to me that the Chitauri are like the Ultimate Universes Skrulls. Does that make them Ultimate Skrulls?

Yes, but you're a surrealist! I'm a normal guy!
Gil Zoo Crew or bust!

The Chitauri are a species from the Ultimate Marvel series of comics. That said however, they are nothing like the aliens called Chitauri in the film. For the purposes of the movie, who they are is of no importance, as they are just generic badguys.
All characters get good screen time. No one felt out of character. The only thing I would have changed would be costumes (get rid of Cap's Zipper, make Thor's costume look more like the comics and make him wear the helmet) and have Hawkeye not be evil for such a large bulk of the film. If those are my only issues, it sure seems aces.
It pleased the nerd in me, it pleased the movie fan in me, it didn't have any dumb #### like Parker dancing or Harry making eggs in SM3 or [all of] Wolverine and it's a movie I can watch with my 8-12 year old nephews or my mom and we'll all enjoy it.
It's the second (or is that third?) highest grossing film for a reason.
But like others say plot is simple. My major/only complain is that I want the Avengers movie to be more heroic and less funny. But I understend that funny is more popular but sublime and heroic is my thing.
Man of steel looks like will be sublime and heroic. Lets see how that go.
I just re-watched this last night. It does NOT hold up that well to repeat viewings.
Things I liked:
Thor
Iron Man
Thor vs. Hulk
Loki
Things I didn't like:
Captain America was worthless. His big leadership moment was played as a joke. I don't think Evans can pull off the command that Cap should have.
Black Widow and her numerous "red in my ledger" comments.
RUFFALO AS BANNER. His constant fidgeting takes me out of every scene he's in. Also: A pep talk from Stark didn't stop him from trying to kill Black Widow...but he somehow learns to control Hulk after a janitor gave him pants?
Some awful dialogue: "The Hawk? He's in his nest." "I have a plan. Attack." "I got red in my ledger."
6 of 10. Very overrated. Like the first Batman movie, people will see this as cheesey/hammy in 10 years.
Completely disagree about Cap being worthless, and Evans not being able to portray him. I thought Cap had many big leadership plays, and Evans from Caps original movie made him his own. I thought the dialogue was great, very Whedonesque, and Im a Big fan of his. Ive seen The Avengers many times, and its still a fantastic film IMHO, to me this generations Star Wars, and Cap is my favorite movie Avenger as well.

can no longer count the times i've watched this. at one point my son was requesting it daily.
Only faults i had with it were Cap's suit (made him look skinny despite the muscles Evan's put on for the role) and an extra scene or 2 building up the Chituari wouldn't have gone a miss either.
One of my favorite scenes (and i know this makes me sound shallow) was the CGI non-cut scene of all the team working together... probably the greatest single scene i've ever witnessed in a cinema
