My question is about his trait that gives him sidestep. If he's the last character alive on my force is he still considered the furthest from my starting area?
Nope. He cannot be further from the starting area than he is, so he can't be the furthest. When he's solo, he's just as far as he is, no more, no less.
Edit: Ignore this, sleep deprivation.

I would say that it does work. He is further from your starting area than any other friendly character, seeing as there are no other friendly characters.
I can see both sides could be right here depending on your interpretation though I favor the can use argument. Doesn't this however highlight the need to improve the wording on powers as mentioned in the wizkids design insight article if we want to make the game more accessible to new players. If two players with years of experience interpret what should be a simple rule in different ways.
When he's the only character on your force, he's always both the furthest from and closest to your starting area.
The ability only checks for him being furthest, which is a condition he meets at all times if he's the only character on your force at the time. It doesn't state that he can't be the closest. I'd say it works.

[Special] Always a Volunteer, Wade: If Deadpool is further from your starting area than all other friendly characters, he can use Sidestep and Stealth.
The only way this "fails" is if you have a friendly character who is equidistant from your starting area, or further away.
You have neither if he's the only remaining member of your force.
I'd rule it's allowed when he's the only one left.
THEY WILL JOIN YOU IN THE SUN: At the beginning of your turn, if Superman occupies clear, outdoor terrain and is on the highest elevation on the map, you may heal him 1 click of damage.
It's not really any different than this. If Superman is on an outdoor map with nothing but level 1 terrain, he is simultaneously on both the highest and lowest elevation. Since he is on the highest elevation, he can heal.
Deadpool has the same thing going on; he can be both closest and furthest at the same time if he's the only character.
Yeah, reading the power again (when I'm not actually half asleep), it works just fine. I'm not even sure what I thought it said, but my first response doesn't even make much sense lol
