While we are getting the umpteenth version of Superman and Batman, there are still oh so many more or less popular characters out there that are still waiting impatiently for their Heroclix debut. In this edition of Unclixed, it's the grim scourge of crime known as Vigilante!
The original Vigilante was Greg Saunders, a gun-toting cowboy who debuted in the 40's, fighting crime and joining up with the Seven Soldiers of Victory before riding off into the sunset in the 70's. But in the 80's, a new Vigilante debuted. His name was Adrian Chase, a district attorney whose family was murdered by a crimelord and almost killed in the attempt. But after being trained how to fight and being given a healing ability by mystical spirits seeking revenge, Adrian launched his own one-man war on crime.
Well, one-man war in that he was the one going around beating and shooting people. He also had a tech expert and a research assistant. But eventually Adrian was left on his own as things got progressively worst for him over the fifty issues of his own series. He was wracked by guilt when he made particularly violent mistakes like beating an innocent man, friends died around him and after being unmasked on the news, he became a hunted man, killing cops as he was trying to evade capture. It all culminated in him committing suicide.
Not a cheery read, folks.
Other characters would take up the Vigilante mantle afterwards. Not drawing influence from Greg Saunders, but rather Adrian Chase and his violent battle with the criminal underworld.
Oof. JJ's clunky exposition is the sort of 80's dialogue that makes me cringe when I read these books.
Why clix him? Three reasons, mainly. First, he looks cool. Second, he clearly had a stronger legacy than his predecessor. Third (and probably the most prevalent reason), he's going to be appearing this season on Arrow. Well, somewhere amidst all the Olicity anyways.
Zack Snyder, take note of how Batman regards Vigilante here.
Who would he play with? As a loner, Adrian's not going to have too many friends allying themselves with him. But he did on occasion work/clash with Nightwing in one issue and Cyborg in another. However, he was once recruited by a shadowy government organization called The Agency on a clandestine mission. That "Agency" would eventually become known as Checkmate.
What would his dial look like? Vigilante's probably going to start with some ranged powers, like RCE or a Running Shot/Penetrating Blast combo. Then leading into some Charge/Flurry special with combat reflexes. On his last click, I can see him having regeneration.
What would your idea of a dial for look like, folks? Feel free to reply as that's it for this edition of Unclixed! Be here next week for an all new Comic Accurate! And in two weeks, we spotlight a Marvel villain!
This would be the figure I have been waiting for. I could see him with multi-point levels, representing most of the different people who have been VIGILANTE all in one figure. But I would prefer a different figure for each. I would play him so often I would become predictable.
I could see a TRAIT: SELF-DOUBT, if VIGILANTE rolls a critical hit, he may not take
another action of ANY kind until he has cleared all action tokens.
SPECIAL POWER: May not attack ANY character possessing POLICE keyword. (1st click )
Good choice! At first glance, Chase is a "Punisher" knockoff with a Bond-ski-villain look (that really works, somehow). On the page, though, the writers did a lot with the consequences of violence, and the book could at times be both dark and deep.
For those who enjoy this character, I strongly recommend the Kurt Gerhardt "Foolkiller" maxi from Marvel.

That phrase you use, "the consequences of violence", has also appeared in recent interviews with Christopher Priest, who is helming the Deathstroke series coming out of DC Rebirth. It sounds like this upcoming series might also be something that appeals to Adrian Chase Vigilante fans.
...now, if we can just get Professor Pyg confirmed.
