Outside of Civil War, Peter with his Iron Spiderman suit is a character I've mainly just heard about. I'm curious what he can do and if Peter is that much better with his new suit.

There are not many stories featuring that suit. Outside of the Civil War issues itself the only time it really showed up was in the Spider-Man Issues during the Civil War Crossover. The suit I believe was on the cover of those issue the story takes place in and after Spideys falling out with Tony Stark he doesn't wear the suit again.

IIRC, Scarlet Spider wore a similar outfit during New Warriors and the new Iron Man series has featured Mary Jane wearing the Iron Spider outfit.

Amusingly enough the "armor" is skin tight on someone half Peter's size. Ain't technology grand?

Speaking of other folks trying on the Iron Spider suit, I recall the MVP triplets using the suit in the old Avengers: The Initiative series.

Now that I look, I see that is the same Scarlet Spider you mentioned. Apparently we already have a clix of this.

It's a little confusing.

In Avengers: The Initiative, the Scarlet Spiders were three clones of MVP who wore versions of the Iron Spider uniform. The surviving clones allied with "Counter Force," also referred to as the New Warriors, during Dark Reign. (This is why Tigra and the Scarlet Spider in Avengers Assemble have the New Warriors keyword.)

When the New Warriors got a new series in 2014, Kaine Parker was a member. He did not wear the Iron Spider costume, however.
