From the 2014 rulebook, which is the most current until the 2017 edition comes out later this year:
Quote
KNOCK BACK
When a player rolls doubles on a successful attack roll, the target is knocked back after any damage taken from the attack is applied. Knock back represents a character being thrown backward by the force of an attack. Certain game effects might knock back a character or allow a character to ignore knock back (examples– Powers: Charge; Abilities: Great Size; Other effects: Multi-base characters). Game effects that allow a character to be knocked back or prevent knock back are checked before damage is dealt.
What Arkaik quoted is pretty much it. You check for knock back immunity before damage is dealt. If we break it down using your examples it would be:
1: Character doesn't take knock back
2. Character doesn't take knock back
3: Character takes knock back
4: Character takes knock back
5: Character doesn't take knock back
6: Character takes knock back.
For 5 and 6, the better answer is it depends on the size of the attacker. Great Size no longer prevents knockback, the attacker simply needs to be the same size or larger.

Good point. It comes up so rarely, I had completely forgotten that a single base or could be knocked back by a figure the same size or bigger.
The KB effect is triggered when Doubles are Rolled.

That is the way it has always been. The rules have just been confusing and so unnecessary clarifications have been issued on certain powers.
"A Jester unemployed is nobody's fool." - The Court Jester "And so he says, I don't like the cut of your jib, and I go, I says it's the only jib I got, baby!

Right, but there was a lot of disagreement that came up regarding a particular scenario.
Target Man-Thing, hit with a roll of doubles.
The damage dealt knocks Man-Thing to his stop click and he is now a giant. Does he get knocked back?
Answer is yes.
Target whoever. Hit with doubles. The damage knocks them onto CR. Do they get knocked back? Answer is yes.
Some people were arguing that CR comes into play after, and it used to because what it did was make someone immune to KB damage (along with allowing the character to choose to be knocked with any attack).
They were just mixing the old (it "mattered" after) with the new (ignores knock back).
That just got me to questioning myself and so I came here to get everything cleared up.
