Samantha Captain America Team Build - Newer Player
Hey Guys,
I am a newer player to Heroclix. I recently played an Avengers Defenders War Pre-Release and pulled a Chase Samantha Captain America (lucky me right!). I loved using this figure at the pre-release but now I want to build a good team with her. As a newer player and with very few figures owned so far, I would like ideas on some good team builds I could do with her. I plan to buy the recommended figures once I find a team or two that I would really like to use.
I don't have her, but I've thought a bit about her and I kind of like the idea of running her with the Captain America Falcon SR from NFAoS... I don't really have a team in mind, but I think the two of them would pair well.
There are a couple followup questions, OP, that could help us give you more specific guidance- what build total are you going for? Are you mostly playing Modern Age or Golden Age? Serious-business or casual (maybe even multiplayer)? Do you prefer theme teams or not? Any characters you particularly do or don't like?
All that aside- congratulations on the pull, and welcome to HeroClix! Here's how I'd go about building a team for that Captain America piece, with the caveat that my team builds tend to be:
- 300points
- keyword-themes
- roughly modern age
- not always the most ruthlessly effective
- focused on whatever I got recently and haven't played yet
- ATAs yes, most other tactics not so much
First, I look at her keywords and her special powers. What makes this Cap different from all others? In this case, it's her Trait that lets her make a non-free action after being carried if she has no action tokens. That's pretty huge, especially on such a relatively low-point character!
So now I'm going to look for characters within one or both of her keywords that can carry her and/or can keep tokens off of her. GlassPanda is right that War Wheel is tops for Soldier taxis, so that leans us away from a S.H.I.E.L.D. theme team... which is fine; there are a couple non-SHIELD Soldier figs that I really like.
- What War Wheel is to taxiing Soldiers, General Lane is to leading them. I consider him a "must" for any Soldier team (read the comments on that unit for info on his complicated but incredibly useful trait). That takes us to 125 points.
- While I'm thinking of Soldiers, I've got the new Steve Trevor and Etta Candy figures from the Wonder Woman Gravity Feed set (Hobby version), and I'm itching to give them a try. New total: 210 points.
- The new Jessica Jones from What If gains keywords from one friendly Captain America - allowing her to become a Soldier by proxy. I think that's fun, and her SHIELD Team Ability can make General Lane and Steve Trevor more dangerous, so she's in. 275 points.
- With 25 points remaining, I'm adding on The Atom from Joker's Wild because I don't have a Diggle from the con-exclusive Arrow pack. Of course, I don't have a Captain America chase or a War Wheel, either, so your call on this one.
So that comes out like this (just drop off one of the last two):
If you want to take it up to 400, simply add the 100-point Soldier of your choice (my pick would be the rare Mona Lisa from TMNT3, an intergalactic salamander warrior, but you've got plenty of choices). But don't add a second Captain America; if you do, I think Jessica Jones' trait would turn off (need a ruling on that, probably) and it wouldn't be a theme team anymore. Since it's a generic theme team, though, all that would cost you is the map bonus-- no Theme Team Prob here.
War Wheel and Jessica Jones take Cap and General Lane towards the front, where Lane can keep tokens off of Cap so the whole squad can be threateningly mobile while attacking. Etta approaches from the rear to give prob control support, and Steve and Atom are your swing pieces to take out the other guy's support (block lines of fire with Steve's Stealth; use Atom with his Combat Reflexes as a close-in tie-up).
Remember that while Jessica can carry both an object and a character, Cap can't carry an object while being carried, so you'll want to place those objects carefully.

This may not be the team you want to end up with, but I hope it gives an idea of one way to think about putting a team together! Soldier and SHIELD are both great keywords to build around- especially SHIELD, over the past few years- so you've got some fun games ahead of you. Enjoy!
It's a very fast team in general, Pixie taxi's all three, and Cap picks up the torso gaining Invulnerable, Superman is played on his defence dial, switching to the hypersonic as needed, to have a second attacker/delivery system for Cap.
The downfall of the team is its lack of heavy damage, but between multiple perplexes super strength and empower you can fix some of that.
