Can bystanders be pilots of vehicles?

Please quote the effects in question. Not only does it help eliminate confusion, but a second reading can often reveal the answer. For reference:

PILOTING: An adjacent friendly character can be given a power action to become the vehicle's one pilot and be placed on this card. Pilots can't possess: ;Duo;, ;Team;, ;Vehicle;, ;Tiny;, ;Giant;, or ;Colossal; symbols and can't be bystanders. A pilot is only a pilot as long as that character is on this card. Vehicles without a pilot can't be given actions. Give the vehicle a power action to place the pilot into an adjacent square. Pilot abilities are traits that are only active when the pilot meets the prerequisites.

No. Only standard characters may be pilots. Bystanders are not standard characters.

STANDARD CHARACTER
[C]A standard character is a character that is not a bystander and does not possess the , , , , , or combat symbols.

It's worth pointing out that the Vehicle rules don't actually say "standard character" (see the rules I quoted above).

This means that if the definition of standard character were to change tomorrow and bystanders were suddenly standard characters, they still couldn't pilot a vehicle since the vehicle rules specifically say "no bystanders".

For now, the difference is entirely academic. The standard character definition matches the list from the vehicle rules. But who knows what the future will bring

Thanks. I don't even know where/how to find current rules for this game anymore so it's easier to just ask on the realm, especially for things that were updated/errata'd.
