Flurry + 3 damage + high SV for 41 pts: great against weak support pieces (like medics :p), can be good against snipers (to tie 'em up or to serve as a mobile shield with ES/D); but you cannot really rely on his AV to hit, and his TA is useless given his dial.
honestly not a bad clean-up piece. Keep him in the back for a while, and when their defense numbers are softer, run in and make the pain come. His TA is, yeah, totally useless (its main use is to go berzerk when they're gonna die anyways, but the way his dial peters out is nasty), but at least his hefty defense will keep ranged threats off his back. And besides, his 12 movement and flurry for 3 damage sell themselves. For 41 points, you can do a hell of a lot worse.
Say what you will about old figures like this--with the grotesque attack value being what it is--a 41 point Master like Whirlwind is not terrible. Flurry with a three damage was welcome back in the day and is still more than a comfort in today's play. A nine attack value would certainly increase his value in play, so perplex is more than needed here. Or hope your opponent plays other golden age figures where the eight attack has a fighting chance. But, as I wrap up, if the potential to do six clicks of damage with a modest Master of Evil like little Whirlwind with his flurry against a solid opponent's piece is not the slightest bit salacious to you, than I don't what in heroclix tickles you the way it does me. It helps I'm a sucker for nostalgia. While I, too, am hoping we'll see this figure remade in the upcoming Mighty Avengers set (modestly, at that, because there are way too many high priced Masters for my liking), this piece is just fine as a lower end support piece. I try to fit him on any team with the good Baron (Helmut, of course).
My love of the character only makes me more upset at his values. I know he's a very old clix, but that starting 8 attack on a vet is still really terrible. ES/D is also pretty lame for a close combat character. Oh well.... perhaps we'll get a remake someday (yeah right)
@Drunky: back when this figure first came out, in Infinity Challenge, the Masters of Evil TA let everyone make attacks for one action, which is what Injustice League is now. Before anything like power actions or stuff like that, you could have three of these guys sit next to one character and Flurry the bejeezus out of it. At least, someone did that to me once. Killed my Sentinel deader than dead. I really hope that worked like that back then, 'cause I might be mad if it never did.
We should've gotten a remake of this guy in the IIM set. He desperately needs it, and I need more mandarin's minions!
Well your wish has been granted. A modern whirlwind is in the new Avengers Assemble set. Hes....ok. he can use charge and flurry with blades. NO HYPERSONIC SPEED. ....but he can use force blast as a free action. The sculpt is nice too.
i was browsing some of the older pieces that i first had when the game started and i came across your post 600...dont know what to think of it. maybe you posted it because you didnt think anyone would visit these old pieces and read it...he has an attack of 8, i know he has the moe ta, meaning he can keep pushing.. but hes not going to hit much(grant it there are a few pieces with printed 15 def.v's) even with flurry. basing an opponent seems like a job for old whirlwind here, but at 41pts, there are plenty of better options out there. i prefer 25pt rock trolls from tmt myself. i like looking back as much as the next guy in remembering when it all began, but i fail to see your logic. if you could(or should happen to read this post since its been some months in between) tell me what you mean about "know what your doing he can be deadly. still after all these years." thanks...meaning no offense ofcourse
