So I'm preparing for my state championship on Friday and so far I've developed 2 teams:
1. Long Range Assassin:
220 pts - ADW Dormammu and Loki
65 pts - AI Unseen
5 pts - AI Dune Buggy special terrain
4 pts - TMT Asgardian Shield
2. Close range bruiser:
194 pts - WK-DC Lobo
25 pts - SMWW Batman/Superman Robot
65 pts - AI Unseen
5 pts - AI Dune Buggy special terrain
4 pts - AI Asgardian Shield
General Strategies:
1. I haven't really played competitively for a few years. I use to do a lot of competitive play back in like 2013-2015 but then I kinda stopped playing for a while. So my collection is kinda... modern limited. But I'm doing what I can with what I've got. If you think certain pieces would suit this team better, feel free to let me know and I'll see if I can't get ahold of them before my tournament.
2. So I love Unseen. He's probably the best support piece in the game. 9 range, ignores everything, outwit and prob, with free action smoke clouds? Insane. Seriously.
3. I really feel like the Dune Buggy special terrain is underrated. Having to deal with a -1 attack on all of your characters when you weren't expecting to can REALLY mess you up if you weren't expecting it. I think this'll really help me fight swarm teams since a 10/9 attack becoming a 9/8 can really change the tide of a game while a 12/11 going down to a 11/10 isn't nearly as impactful.
4. Asgardian shield... cuz I've got the points and it's the one equipment I have... I've got a few OP kit relics but... relics aren't modern legal anymore are they? If so, I have like the cosmic control rod, millennium puzzle, and omega drive... though I think the OD is definitely not legal... along with the cosmic control rod... I don't know. I have a few relics lying around. Let me know if any of them are modern legal. I feel like maybe getting a hold of the Symbiote would be AMAZING on either of my teams --Edit: My friend isn't playing so he says I can use his symbiote.
5. My biggest fears are: Uni-mind, unseen, carnage,
Specific Strategies:
1. Assassin: So firstly, I LOVE D&L for their ability to take away an opponents object. I could easily turn 1 run in, and remove that key Symbiote on my opponents team, or remove that Weapon Drop they were counting on before they can equip it. I think that could be BRUTAL. But I also would be able to sit down in hindering terrain and take some 4 pen-dmg from afar with prob. The mystics would help me deal with anything too scary. For instance, if I could knock unimind off click 1, mystics can really eat him up. Unfortunately they don't have outwit protection and once they get knocked off their first few clicks, they kinda just die.
--Edit: Plus D&L's trait triggers allowing me to spawn mindless ones when an opposing player replaces one of their characters so that helps shut down shifting focus shenanigan.
--Edit again: Plus D&L's trait triggers when bystanders are spawned, so when my opponent uses a carnage to spawn a symbiote, I can counter with a bystander of my own.
2. Brute: So I love Lobo. He's one of my favorite pieces. I use to love running him with Ion for the outwit, then having like 6 outwits each turn. Life was fun. But now I feel like Lobo might be able to still brute strength his way through again. Sure his stats are a little low for what he costs but I still feel like his phenomenal powers allow him to continue being a monster. Landing on that sweet sweet 12 attack 5 damage click and having 2 other lobo clones on the board feels sssooo good. He has no outwit protection though. But again, if I position correctly I feel like he can really chew through Unimind. Plus I'd have the SMBM Robot. That colossal retaliation is brutal. 2 penetrating damage to everyone in range can sometimes be a little anti-synergy with Lobo, unless he has invincible, but it can just melt swarm teams, then after he turns all the terrain into hindering terrain, and he has stealth, and the superman TA, 11 attack, 18 defense, and empower to make Lobo even scarier. It'll be great against those carnages since it can just murder Carnage and all it's bystanders.
--Edit: Also the brute team is a theme team (cosmic) while the assassin team is not
I know this is a lot but I really like to delve down into the strategy of my teams and tinker with the possibilities and ANY criticism or ideas people can throw my way would be great. Thanks :3

As fun as D+L are to play the current Meta will do a lot to counter it. Often enough Uni-Mind will rely on a call in to do the attacking for him.
For Long Tange you may want to consider using one of the new colossals on lower point dials. Many of them have 10-13 range and will still allow for another secondary attacker.
AH! I read the rotation list but I thought all those characters were modern legal. T.T rip Lobo, I've had many good years with you...
Well if Unimind calls someone in, I can get a bystander token for it. Then if I somehow manage to kill Unimind, I get a bystander when he replaces. I bought a brick of Infinity so I have a few colossals there to play with but I wasnt playing during sets like TMT so I dont have anything like that.
I feel like a well placed bystander token can really shut certain call-ins down. Like if I just place it infront of D&L that blocks line of fire and it can make moving in for a charge a bit of a hassle
After reading through said provided list of top teams, I'm really starting to remember why I didn't like serious constructed tournaments. Eh. I guess I'll just go with my little humble team and just see how far I go. But after this I think I'll just stick with sealed events, where I feel most comfortable.
I know it might be disheartening, but I think you should keep trying to build teams like this and run them in competitive events. I usually try to build off-meta. I'll include some meta pieces, but try them with something a little different. Similar to your first team. Who knows, with some luck and good positioning, maybe you do well. And at least it was your own team, and not just copying someone else's idea. We need a little variety to keep things fresh.

I really appreciate this attitude. Even if I don't do well, at least it was my team.
Your team inspired me to make an Unseen team. This is what I made:
90 AI049 Photon
75 TMNT3023 Shredder Clone
20 AIG025P Groot
65 AI043 Unseen
50 TMNT4028 Ha'ntaan The Rat King
300 points
Strategy is to use Photon and shredder to muder pogs including the Groot pog.
Then hopefully the opponent will be tempted to retaliate and probably miss.
Meanwhile Rat King bullies their start area with his rat hole.
So I ended up running:
Dorki at 150,
Unseen
Cosmo
Symbiote
and the SHIELD flying car.
I felt like the buggy was counter intuitive for what I was trying to do. And I felt like since the game was over if Dorki got hit once anyway, I didnt value the +1 damage and attack over just adding Cosmo. And damn does Cosmo pull his own weight in gold. I love that little borker.
But yeah. I'm now the 4th best Heroclix player in Colorado
Note: Only 7 people showed, and none of them played teams that I specifically designed my team to beat. :/
But I'm still proud. Im proud because this was my first major tournament in like 4 years of me playing and I had to use the scraps of figures I had JUST picked up like a week before in a tournament. I had little time to prepare a team and my picks were limited to what I got in 2 bricks. So yeah. I'm extremely proud of myself.
