Now, should that object be instead 'equipped', does that restriction still apply?

This was in relation to a vehicle carrying a character that had been equipped with an object. Was that a valid action?

Yep! Same as if you had a resource or relic applied to the figure. As long as it's not an object being held that could be used in an attack, you're fine.
