When paranormal occurrences start to plague the world of the living, a special team of Mutants is put together to investigate them... provided they don't kill each other first! In this edition of Comic Accurate, it's the New Mutants!
In 2018, a new iteration of The New Mutants was put together by writer Matthew Rosenberg. The team would be centered around Magik, who has been placed in charge of a Mutant strike team devoted to checking out supernatural incidents occurring around the country. Illyana is given this task by Karma, who turns out had an agenda of her own; her evil brother is behind these threats.
Thing is, Illyana doesn't really know that until the last issue where things go totally bonkers and the series ends on a cliffhanger involving Warlock that is presently still unresolved. Needless to say, Illyana's team consists of Boom Boom, Rictor, Wolfsbane and Strong Guy. And if you don't think there's some tension between those last three members based on events that took place in the end of Peter David's X-Factor series, you'd be wrong.
But despite their conflicts, Illyana's team is the core for our build!
Why these figures - Mostly the team is the usual mix of recent iterations of the characters and then picking a Magik piece that would fit the remainder of points. (Though as a point of order, since the three more recent figures of Wolfsbane have very similar point values, I definitely wouldn't fault players that opt to run the version from Web of Spider-Man just because it's probably the best dial despite the WolverTeam sculpt.)
Tips for running this team - It's admittedly an uphill battle with this team. No theme, no practical TA's outside of Magik's one Mystics, and you have a lot of starting defense values that are super squishy in close combat. So your best bet would be to have Magik get Boom Boom and Rictor into position where they can take on the enemy from far away. Then once the opposition is softened up, THEN send Strong Guy and Wolfsbane in for the finishing touches.
Let us know how the New Mutants did for you! Next week, it's a new issue of Unclixed! Then in two weeks, it's another edition of Comic Accurate!
Been reading this series on Marvel Unlimited and it's fun. I would totally play this team.
Pretty sure this is the only book that actually acknowledges that the Peter David X-Factor existed, though. Every other part of the Marvel X-Universe seems to ignore it.
Whoof, I remember that Rictor really fondly but his attack values have not aged well for his point cost. Strong Guy at least has his trait and a deep dial (though he’s still probably about 25-30 points overcosted for today’s game). And poor Boom Boom, coming out just before EE & PPB stopped stacking...

I'm glad you like it because this what the New Mutants film is going be based on provided Disney doesn't shelve the project
I played this team almost exactly a few weeks ago but I used the wkM15-002 Wolfsbane instead. I really like her crazy dial things. She can be a monster that's hard to kill. Able to tie up a whole team.
