If the Object is an object that can only be ko'd in an object attack.

I would think so. I believe there have been a few powers and rulings similar to this although I can't think of which example off the top of my head... but the free action is to place him with the destroying the object being the secondary.
It's not that different than RS or Charge... you move, then attack... but if you don't have a legal target, you can't take the move back.
