My question is this, what should I do? Do I let it go since I didn't catch it soon enough? I'm almost certain they didn't do this intentionally. Do I give bonus points to the people they played against? Do I give the person in question 0 points? What I do here could make a big difference.
If you decide to let it slide, use sheets from here on out to take that responsibility out of your hands. I personally would add bonus points to the people he played, but I couldn't tell you how many points.
It is and it isn't just 8 points though. When using an ATA, you need to assign it to everyone so it's either all or none. That can then compound into choosing between the ATA or dropping a character. One character can really make the difference in a game. My biggest concern is fairness for all the players with such a large prize on the line. It's my first time giving away a prize this big and I'm learning from my experiences.
Right.
Any decision is going to be a compromise, of course, so trying to find one that is least harmful is likely the target.
Yes I do. I'm willing to e-mail it to you to look at if you'd like. It tracks your team, ATA's, Feats, your opponents, totals, objects, theme, etc. It's a lot like the official score sheet, I just put it into word so I could print off multiples on one sheet and have it the correct size. But your opponent doesn't need to sign off on it. On his score sheet, he wrote Thunderbolts ATA on 2 out of the 3 characters that were actually using it.
This is exctly why I include a spot for opponents to initial a player's scoresheet. If I can demonstrate that no one caught an error, everyone shares a measure of responsibility. Something to consider.
Now, hindsight aside, there aren't many ways to proceed wherein someone isn't getting hosed. Equitably speaking, the best way to handle the situation is to perhaps admit to the error as the Head Judge and declare the event a "wash", removing its results from consideration.
That said, I can see how that may not be an attractive solution, but the only other options I can see is to either DQ the player from the event in question and move everyone else up in the rankings (or however you're tracking progress) or to penalize the player in question's points or however you're ranking their progress.
What I do not see as a viable option is opening it up for a larger discussion and hoping for a consensus. Don't get me wrong; I'm sure your players can come to an agreement but: a) you're the Head Judge, and b) no matter what they all say someone will not like the situation. Best to not open yourself up to that.
I do not think letting this slide is a viable option either. In the interest of a level playing field something should be done to offset the significant advantage the player in question was allowed to exercise over their opponents.

I've always found it best in these situations to deal just with the facts rather than speculate on the motivations of players, including situations involving my own.
Just my $.02

That's what she said?
It was probably a completely honest mistake, then. I didn't even realize that Taskmaster had the T-bolts keyword until JUST RECENTLY. Probably because he SHOULDN'T HAVE IT!

Back in the day, that was what they were primarily for! I love generics...ask anybody that knows me. However, I can't stand generics that cost over 40 points. At that point they are not generics to me. They are more like named characters. Generics should fit into the nooks and crannies of a team. If you are making a generic army, you should be able to work easily with the points as well.
Other than my beloved Symbiotes, I agree with you. But in thier case, it is rare they are used as generics in Monster teams. Have about 14 of them and I could always use more. Never had more fun then playing that team.
