The Scarlet Witch's eyes opened wider. "Wow," she said quietly, almost to herself. "How many of them are there?" Then, addressing Iron Man, she said, "Do you think we can reason with them, Iron Man?"

Iron Man looked over to the slowly advancing group. "We mean you no harm but we cannot allow you to damage any private property. Put down your weapons, and we'll discuss the matter." Iron Man's overtures did not, however, seem to have any sort of calming effect on the Avengers' adversaries. In fact, it seemed to rile them up all the more, as if Iron Man's message had been utterly misunderstood.

"Shellhead," said Hawkeye, "wait a sec." Hawkeye could see that Iron Man was ready to fly into action. "They're not doing anything yet, maybe they're gonna back down. Besides this new bow gives me better range; let's see what they have in mind."

Iron Man peered through the slits in his helmet at the Avengers' adversaries and decided to wait a moment. "Okay, Clint, we'll try it your way for now, but Wanda, you should cover him. There's something strange about this whole situation, anyway."

The Scarlet Witch cautiously moved closer to the iconoclastic mob. "Of course I'll help, Tony," she replied with confidence, "and you're right: this feels wrong somehow."

Iron Man turned to Hawkeye, "Can you see anything? My sensors are being affected by some mystical field, I think. That smoke is blocking my view."

"Don't worry," replied the archer, "I got it." Hawkeye's new bow proved to be a difference-maker, for its better range made a highly improbable shot possible. "AUUAgh!" The Avengers heard the mob's leader shout in pain.

The Scarlet Witch answered for the archer, who was catching his breath after the exertion of running forward and then shooting. "We'll be fine," her voice betraying a touch of offense at Hank's addressing Hawkeye primarily. "Just be careful; they outnumber us more than two to one, and there's something odd going on here..."

Hawkeye groaned in pain. One of the throng had thrown a rock and hit the archer in the head. Besides the blood it had drawn, the injury meant that Hawkeye was no longer able to see as clearly through the smoke. He grit his teeth and ran toward the Avengers' adversaries, notching an arrow and then letting it fly. It wasn't his best shot, but it was enough. His attack successfully hit the crowd's leader and knocked him out.

"Hawkeye!" shouted the Scarlet Witch as her compatriot was knocked out. She also noticed how the Avengers' adversaries were using their familiarity with the surroundings to advance stealthily. Wanda was undecided, especially in light of the unusual perceptions she was having. Should she hold her powers in reserve or be ruthless in attacking the woman who had knocked out Hawkeye?

Iron Man watched as the members of the throng began to scatter. One of them stayed close enough for the Golden Avenger to attempt to subdue him, but Iron Man held back a bit and missed. Did Iron Man not want to injure him too badly or was it the strange circumstances that made him hesitate?

Wanda marshaled her mystical might, and a hex bolt crossed the room. These strange surroundings rattled Wanda, and she had to redouble her efforts for her attack to have the desired effect. "Where in the worlds are we here?" thought Wanda to herself.
