This is helpful. What happened to me once was my opponent started his running shot decided midway he would activate the shield ta on one of the figures he was moving adjacent to. Personally it seemed a bit of a reach. If it had been activate shield ability without figure adjacent and then do running shot ending adjacent I can see how that would work. I think that this is what is being referred to? Unless the shield ta can be activated mid running shot? If this is the case I need an explanation for that.
You must be adjacent at the time of the attack.
If you RS next to a SHIELD guy, you can get the boost.
If you start next to a SHIELD guy and RS away from him, you cannot get the boost.
The explanation is in the TA.

S.H.I.E.L.D. When a friendly character makes a ranged combat attack, you can give any number of friendly characters adjacent to the attack and using the S.H.I.E.L.D. team ability either a free action or a power action (but not both) before making the attack roll: For each character given a free action, modify the attacker’s range by +1; for each character given a power action, modify the attacker’s damage value by +1.
For some reason people seem to think that you couldn't use it with RS because it is "in the middle of" another action.
The thing is, it is ALWAYS* going to be in the middle of another action, even if you are just standing there doing a regular ranged combat action.
* - If there was a ranged attack made without an action, it could still be used, but it would not be duing an action.

??
I am unclear what you mean. if he moves into adjacency via running shot, he can activate the shield ta at that time.

Let me try to explain better. I'll do the best I can so bear with me a little. If I need another try after this I will.
A running shot that ends adjacent to a figure with shield ability. Running shot action not completed yet. Give token to shield character and activate bonus. Complete running shot action. This is the order of events how they happened.
How I think it is ok. Shield character given action token activating bonus. Running shot ending adjacent to shield character action complete. Bonus is had everything is legit.
I hope this is a much better explanation. Something didn't sit right with me when it happened and it was the order of events. Unless someone can tell me the first order of events is ok. Cause if I remember right you cannot make an action while in the middle of another action.
Shield works like enhancement but requires an action to activate.
Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong or explain it better if you get what I'm saying.

This is completely legal.

Did he start or end his action next to the SHIELD guy. If he starts next to him and moves away, he can't get the bonus.

Yes, but SHIELD's action is an exception to the rule of no actions within other actions by its wording.

Hmmm. I did miss that. Sorry.
I have to ask you to explain this to me a little further. I think I understand what you are saying. just would like a little clarification with the order of things.
How I always used shield's power action option was i would give the shield figure the power action and then give the figure gaining the bonus the action. So to me it hadn't seemed like I was using an action "in the middle of another action". To me I was giving my shield figure it's action then starting and subsequently finishing the other characters action.

I hope you could understand my confusion here.
Simply put, your way was incorrect.
The TA explicitly states that you give the action to the SHIELD guy "When a friendly character makes a ranged combat attack..."
It doesn't get much more pinpointed than that.
If you are not making an attack, you cannot use SHIELD.
If it is a RS and you haven't even begun to move, are you making an attack? Not yet.
When is that the character makes his attack? After the movement. It is at this point, during the attack, that SHIELD can be used.
I've seen a mob of SHIELD, backed up by a single big piece like Sinister Nick Fury, take down a feat up E-2 Superman and pit crew. And it was mostly because the long range Snipers were boosted to big damage AND long range by all their nearby buddies.
This is a basic question along the same lines so I thought I would just put it here- can you use RS along with a piece that has Enhancement? If so does the piece with Enhancement need to start next to the piece with RS, or be adjacent to the square the RS ends?

Enhancement When an adjacent friendly character makes a ranged combat
attack, this character modifies the adjacent friendly
character’s damage value by +1 once for the attack. More
than one character with Enhancement can modify the same
attack. This character can use this power more than once per
turn.
You make the attack after moving, and that is when you must be adjacent.

Enhancement also occurs when the attack is made, so a character with Running Shot, HSS, move and attack, etc. must be adjacent to the Enhancer when it attacks, not when it is in its initial starting position. In this respect, Enhancement is identical to SHIELD TA.
What is not identical, though, is that Enhancement is a not an action, so you can carry an Enhancer with a Running Shot character and still gain the benefit. Both HSS and move and attack, though, have the attack occuring during the movement, so any carried characters would still be off the board at the time of the attack and their powers (Enhancement, PC, etc) would not be available until after the movement was completed.
What about the range bonus part of the new SHIELD TA?
For example: I use HSS for a ranged attack. I move, stop next to a SHIELD guy, and attack before I keep moving. Is my range halved then increased by 1, or increased then halved? Actually, I guess the point is mute (for everyone but OR V Shazam) because we always round up in Heroclix, right?

I am not arguing the case as it is now, but I could have sworn that back in the day when Shield was first introduced you had to be adjacent at the beginning of the turn (whether or not at the end I don't recall). Is that just a bad dream?
