Just read the first two issues of the current run. No real attachment to the character, though I did enjoy reading her in Busiek's Avengers. No strong feelings about the costume or the names she goes by.
I thought it was an average start to the series. I may pick it up discounted down the line. Seems to have some odd writing decisions, such as ending #1 with a funeral for a character we barely knew. Art was up and down, but I really dug the panel layout in #2 for Carol's atmospheric flight.
It's cool that Marvel has a commitment to having the character in her own title, though it does remind me a bit of the push for Elektra a decade ago. Lots of people are desirous for Carol to be a breakout female hero, though I don't know if that will stick and it's a lot of hype. My wife had picked me up some Marvel stamps several years ago (back when postage was 41 cents). I didn't use them back then, but I use them now to decorate my smartphone. It's a set of notable characters and comic covers. So you've got some iconic Kirby art, silver age #1s, Ditko Spidey ... and some Elektra cover from her 90s series.

The black and gold costume wasn't thong-ish to begin with, that seemed to start more or less recently. depending who the artist was.
You are spot-on with your recollection here. The original version of the black Ms. Marvel costume as it appeared in the 70s was no more revealing than any one-piece swimsuit of that era (take a look at the Binary entry of the OHOTMU Deluxe Edition for a good reference) - the 70s red and blue Ms. Marvel costume actually showed a lot more leg than than the black suit! Remember, we had The Code back then, too, so thongs riding up peoples' posteriors can be laid firmly at the doorstep of artists from the last 15-20 years.

And depending on who's posterior, it can be "blame" on the doorstep or "thanks".
Wolverine in a thong is "blame".
Mary Jane Watson in a thong is "thanks".
Hulk in a thong is "blame".
Storm in a thong is "thanks"
Namor in a thong is "blame"
Sue Storm in a thong is "thanks".
Hell, Sue Storm in her "Malice" outfit is a big "thanks". And may cause some to want to be paddled, as they've been "bad" comicbook fans who need to be punished.
Reading the "Brain Lesion" story arc. I really dig the art (Filipe Andrade). Some would fine it too weird and/or cartoony, but it has that Nino look. and The Fauxhawk is gone.
I think you might be in the minority on that one. Because if cosplayer enthusiasm is any indicator, Carol's new costume is the biggest thing to hit the scene since Harley Quinn. Women with hips can go out and play dress-up and they don't have to show off all the goodies to do it.

I'm indifferent to the name change. I donn't care about the original Mar-Vell, so taking his name to honor him is a "whatever" to me. I thought Warbird was a cooler codename, especially for a former fighter pilot, but they don't seem to want to go back to that. I was fine with the fauxhawk for no other reason than it distinguished her from all the other female heroes who seem to have long flowing hair. It was a unique look. The costume is something I'm gradually getting used to. At least they didn't ditch the sash from the previous one. I always liked the sash.
I haven't loved the art on the current series, mostly because they keep using artists who are such a radical shift from the one before them. Dexter Soy's art is nothing like Emma Rios' is nothing like Andrade's, is nothing like the fellow doing the current crossover with Avengers Assemble. Contrast that with a book like Daredevil where they've used different artists, but a lot of them provide a similar feel to the book. Captain Marvel's is all over the place.
That being said, I like this one a little more than her previous book. I think DeConnick emphasizes Carol's stubborn/headstrong streak and her impatience. And she's actually trying to build up a supporting cast around Carol, something I always appreciate. It's not one of my absolute favorites, but it's solidly good every month.

I saw someone on twitter with an amazing cosplay of the new costume this morning. Didn't screen grab it though. Guess it didn't happen, but it did make me think of this thread.
I really like the new Captain Marvel. The initial story was a little hard to follow, but it's starting to hit its stride. Really wish they would just pick a hair style and stay with it. It's also always nice to see a woman move into a less revealing costume.

Not sure if you were joking, but in case you weren't, I very quickly found a bunch. Literally all I did was type in "Captain Marvel cosplay" on Google and then hit images. I'd have thought that most images from that would have produced Billy Batson or Mar-Vell pics, but there are scads of Carol Danvers ones. I think Hail Eris' assessment has some weight.
