Um, I would like to state that I do work for a major company/Corp. and EazySCT has it dead on.
Now I am not saying the idea doesn't have merit, but don't expect world shaking responses.
I've also been in the middle of a buyout, and he's got it right again. Nothing changes for the first year/year and a half, then it either gets better or horribly worse. Buyouts usually also occur when one company is really in the hole for one reason...
Will Topps blow this? I don't think so, so I don't see the need to even WORRY enough to send a good will letter.
Originally posted by EazySCT People only complain about the game, because it used to be different. Read my butt-kissing posts from when I first joined this site. MK was the coolest game in the WORLD and then it changed. That's why people complain.
Go back to a little before when you joined and see the huge numbers of threads complaining about Storm Golem, ***Amotep Gunners, and so on. The complainers are always around, and they choose to either sit back and whine or try and be proactive about doing something. I have no problems with people that complain and then try and do something to change the game (like Borg, who does GREAT stuff with rules changes and so on), but don't whine just because you can and it's the easiest thing to do.
With Topps running the show it will only be about money now, and the way you make money is to sell big overpowerd figures and think game balance as secondary, game balance doesnt make money, chase figures do.
I for one hope Topps doesn't run the game into the ground. They are leaving Jordan Weisman and his comrads in place, which is a very smart move. It shows they are at least commited to WK's games-they don't want to cause a huge shake down. That, or they don't have a bloody blue clue what collectible minitures games are all about. And if it's more the later than the former, I would hope the company would come to understand over time.
You certainly have a point about that. It's a proven fact that chase "items" usually have a positive impact on sales.

Yeah Topps bought WK to make money, but I seriously doubt the powers that be in WK's current management would "fall in line" easily. I believe Weisman and co. would fight to keep their guys mostly intact.
I'm sorry, but I have to say this. :(When Borg <ever the proactive person> seems like he's willing to toss in the towel, that really sends a message. I _want_ to be optomistic here. It's just that... I don't know. :( Something doesn't seem or feel "right".
I whole heartedly agree that we lost something VERY special from the early days of Mage Knight. Before Uberbound, before the several rules changes, before Big Ram and Yoyo, before the Amazon Drac, before campaigns and organized tournament rankings.
There was a great little game with a fantastic cast of warriors and factions, a simple rules system that could be learned very quickly, _fun_ tournaments. You did not need to make a huge investment to get into the game competively. I got many of my fav figs in my starter (Storm Golem, Steam Golem...) and first few boosters. Yeah we had broken figs, but we took it instride because WE LOVE THE GAME SO MUCH THAT WE WERE WILLING TO AVOID LOOKING AT ITS FAULTS. What I feel really delt the community a disorganizing blow was WK's expansions and <admitibly almost required> perceived need to top what they had already produced. It's a sad trend in gaming that's _very_ hard to avoid- the Power Sink.
WK deserves credit, though for releasing 2 major expansions (Lancers and my beloved Whirlwind;)) and a new base set (Unlimited) without a huge loss of balance. In my mind Sinister started a trend that has created the current atmosphere we endure: one were people fight amoungst themselves, complain, flame, call for Wk's proverbial head. I never saw anything like this (atleast on its scale) in those mystical early days. Heck few would have been able to comprehend it or even see it comming.
Paridise Lost... That is how I choose to call Mage Knight now. Can anyone offer some hope that this will change? Can the combined efforts of Topps and WK "right the ship"? I don't know, I just don't know. :(
