VS cost alot more than ygo. Why? Since every set there is a deck you will want to build and you got to shell out money for like every card for that deck. For ygo there is always a set of cards you will use and then you add in the cards that make the deck what it is (machines, warriors, etc.) and there you go. Also i bet vs will go into the stage just like magic where they ban out sets which means your old cards become useless unless they get reprinted. Ygo's ban system will be that they ban things and eventually they come back. There for, vs cost more. Maybe not right now, but as the game evolves it will...
Nah. Yu-Gi-Oh! is mainly expensive for the competitive NEW players who can't shell out the money for the older cards, what also adds to it are the demands for making an all foil deck for some others.
ie. Raigeki, PSV Jinzo, Mirror Force, etc..

On the contrary, something was passed on to me from my local card shop that there will be re-print sets by Late 2004 or something, I have my doubts with the info. If anyone can confirm anything do say, as new people can re-joice. [/END RUMOR]
The VS. System on the other hand will be heck a lot more expensive for both new and veteran players a like. Why? Depending on the person, it might be that for every set that is release new deck types become more viable and the replacing of decks comes into play and a 60 card competitive deck isn't exactly a cake walk to build from scratch.
All I got to say is if they cycle sets I am gone. Why I left Magic. I think it is never needed and is just used to draw in money. If you don't want people using a certain card make it obsolete by making a card that trumps it or *cough* ban it. I would rather not be able to play with one card then all of the cards I spent money on.
He asked how much it would take to purchace one (1) competitive deck. That would be much less than purchasing out all those really rare Yu Gi Oh cards that you HAVE to have in every deck.
For the argument on card pool cycling I am going to start another thread on that topic as it would be a hijacking his thread. And it is good to have a better understanding why this happens. ie It is not about the money...
elf swordsman that was a good point but there was one problem...i had already mentioned it twice, not sure if you read it or not but it's alright
firefly, you might be thinking that the ban list and cycling of sets for yugioh will be bad but the truth is, while a lot of players like yourself will be quitting, the ban list may be the only hope left for the game because remember what i just said about the whole 1-5 cards thing, it will eliminate that whole aspect since there will no longer be 35 staple cards in your deck since not all of them will be able to be played, new strategies can come up and the same decks will not be seen at tournaments anymore and finally, finally the combo decks will come out because there will be no harpies feather dusters, imperial orders, or raigekis and change of hearts floating around, simply put, if you control the game~you can continue to control it without your opponent topdecking something amazing
and that is the real truth about yugioh's future

Quick Q:
What would a casual deck set you back? One that isn't meant for tournaments, but fun pick-up games?
Due to my Heroclix addiction, I'm fond of Sentinels in particular. Is it possible to build a fun/casual Sentinel deck without a lot of green?
What about other factions? What's the most expensive? Least?
Something interesting I noticed was that while the local game store was able to get me boxes of cards for $85 or so. I went on eBay and there are Buy Now auctions for the boxes priced at $47 + 7 for shipping. Uhhh, I like to support my local game store, but that's a hefty difference in price. I already bought three boxes from the store, so I bought two more from eBay.
for those that are saying that Vs is more expensive, cuz you will want to buy a new deck for a new faction every set, i dont agree with that, sure you may want to do that, but you don't have too, if you like playing a certain team and dont really feel like playing any new team then either just buy some singles to help your old deck out and there you go.
and as for blocks or cycling sets.. there has not been any mention of that, and as long as each team and faction is balanced and tested against all the other teams, then there will be no reason to have blocks or cycles, so in that aspect Vs is a pretty cheap game.
Changing decks for every set are for those people with the money and time to afford it me thinks. It's just that because if like some players who are short on cash and enter tournaments, it's better to stick with a single deck build every cycle, once your deck is already banned, just build that new deck you always wanted for the current cycle. My two cents.
Not to plug or anything, but the new VSed is going to reinstate a new and improved card/deck pricing feature. So, for those on a budget, this should be very useful.
beatdown was hugely overpriced, but the expense in VS is less about the price of the packs as the poor coalation and small box size. While the overall investment is less than buying a box of raw deal (my other game of choice), with 36 packs, you are more likely to get at least one of each uncommon in a box. The difference lies in buying 8 boxes of Marvel and getting 2/3 beatdowns or buying 6 boxes of RD or another 36 count box and getting 7 copies of each rare.
