I was thinking about starting to play Vs. System. However, I was told that if you want to be a exceptional player, you must be able to have a lot of money to spend. I was wondering about some of the other player's views on the cost of the game.
Well that could be said about any CCG that didn't have a randomizer to determine outcomes in game. i.e. die rolls
But look at it this way, if you do your research on forums and cardlists online you can see what all is in each set. I know there are a lot of lots for evey common/uncommon per set for like 10 bucks a lot. Buy four of those and you have a complete playset for the cost of half a box. Then you can either research a deck and buy the rare singles you know you will need for that deck with the other 40 you would spend on a box and be limited to that particular deck or you can buy packs. The cost of the game is all dependent on what you want to do with it. If you want a complete playset of every set ... yeah that's gonna cost ya. If you focus on a couple teams and trade away other teams you don't use so much you can cut down on your costs.
The best thing to do, in that case, is to use mtgplay and test, test, test where the cards are free;)
once you've tweaked your deck, buy those common and uncommon playsets and the rares you need. Chances are, you'll be able to trade those rares up if you need a deck change...
In my opinion you are the Pro and the deck is whatever you want it to be..
If you mean the Tier 1 deck that eveyone and thier mother are playing because it has the best win/loss ratio ... around 100 dollars.
I perfer to go for originality .. less expensive .. and everyone loves a surprise... not too mention how pissed you will be when you build that deck and oh look first round you play the one deck that can beat you and are knocked out of the tournement. No deck is perfect.. and bad draws are every gamers kryptonite. Play for fun ... if you win a little money or whatever on the side ... bonus.
I think the individual card prices are comparitively low compared to yugioh. Also, the value of a booster pack is much better. My local store sells yugioh boosters (9 cards in a pack) for £2.75 and VS for £2.50 per pack.
More cards + Less money = Better value (in my opinion)
Here is some better advice. Do like Kerg said and try to play where the resources are "free". MtGplay is good along with Apprentice. They both have the entire catalogue of cards to use so you can build to your hearts content.
At that point you need to decide if it is worth buying the Beatdowns and Feral Rages at 25 bucks a pop. Yes they are fantastic cards, but can you build a better deck for the cost involved?
That is hard to say. Wild Vomit can be built on the low budget idea, but you have to find all those Mark IV's.
When you decide you want to play this game at a competitive/pro level you need to put cost out of your mind set. You just build the best possible deck you can and hope you did enough research while building it.
If you are putting a handicap of cost of building a deck in front of you already you may not be ready to start competing at the pro level. Because at that level those players have every card they need to build any deck they want to.
I would also tell you that unlike Yu Gi Oh this game does not require EVERY power card(restricted) card to play. That greatly decreases the amount of money needed to create competitive level decks. You will however need to chalk up on average 200-300 for those decks also here.
The best place to check for prices of cards will be those places advertised on this site. That will give you a good idea of what it will take to build the higher level decks.
i am sorry but i believe you guys are wrong on the cost of yugioh/this game for one reason
yugioh may seem like it costs more than vs but in reality it does...RIGHT NOW ANYWAYS...although yugioh does cost a lot you need to take into consideration that the cards you buy will always be used in your deck unless something else broken comes out
for vs there can be many changes, and different deck ideas and certain ones phase out to not being tier so yes yugioh WILL over time cost way less than vs
if u don't believe me then look at mtg prices compaired to vs and it is the same way, it just takes time like i said
yes it is very cheap compaired to yugioh right now
but what happens when it's 3 sets down the road and u have spent at least $500 on cards and aren't done yet...
then what, think long term not right now
yugioh decks only need 1-5 cards per set that comes out and 5 is only if there are a lot of broken things and in the latest set nothing was worthy
