I was watching TV the other day and I saw a commericial for Yu-Gi-Oh or some other UDE game, why can't they do a VS one??? I guarentee that little kids will see their favorite superheros and want to buy some packs and try to get them :)
As mentioned previously, national TV campaigns are expensive. And, probably wouldn't hit their target market as well. Man CCG's don't need the commercials since they already have 30 minute commercials on numerous times a week through their TV shows (Yu-Gi-Oh, Duel Masters, etc...)
Now, on a LOCAL level, I have seen stores do advertising on TV for events and the like. For example, I saw an ad over the weekend for a Yu-Gi-Oh pre-release event at a local store. The ad was short and most likely inexpensive. And I know that this place gets a TON of kids for Yu-Gi-Oh events.
There's a thread in the General Discussion forum named "Pushing the Game" which laments some of the same things as you. That, while the game is doing well at high money events, that the local level game seems to be growing as a much slower rate. I think that UDE is seeing this as well and pushing to help hobby leagues both form and grow. The success of this game will depend on the strength of the hobby leagues and weekly players and not the $10K winners and pro-circuit.
I agree, but not completely. The point of this thread is to find a way to GET people to learn the game AND find a place to play it, w/out trying to force yourself into a UDE store locator.
What use is that type of advertising to people who know nothing of the game? None. To gamers, maybe. Just them. It's not often that people just learning vs as their 1st game would find out about it at all this way.
I do agree, though, on your views of the success of the game.
Here is something that backs up OSM's point. Many players outside of VS really don't understand it at all. This is from a Pojo thread talking about the Yugi regional that's taking place the day of the $10K finals in Chicago (April 3rd.)
"I find it odd that Pastimes would schedule a VS. tourny on a day of a major YGO tourny. How big is this VS. thing they're doing? Because if they are going to go against UDE SOP (standard operating procedures) and do it only one day for a simple VS. round... that would just (edit)."
Obviously a VS 10K is much bigger than a Yugi regional. I advised the Yugi players on that thread about how big a $10K is, but UDE is missing a golden opportunity to turn Yugi players into VS players as they age, and with much, much bigger prizes than Yugi would ever dream of giving away.
Yugi barely gives away $10,000 worth of prizes at the National Tournament, let alone multiple $10K events per month and the 250K per stop Pro Circuit.

You missed a major point:

also, I know that people here know the game. that's not the problem. the problem is that ude is not making it easy for people to learn that the game exists.
About the yugioh game, I think that ude needs to smack themselves upside the head if they dare to schedule a yugioh event on the same day as a vs event, unless they are not very important (IE, hobby store tourneys) I play yugioh myself, and I'd be ticked if I had to choose between a PCQ Boston and a NE regional.
How did he know we'd get a Marvel Legends set back in early 2005?
I thought I'd bump this just to point out how we've been trying for years to get something as simple as advertising for our game and UDE didn't really do anything about it.
Also, my grammar/structure from 4 years ago was atrocious.
Sigh, it seems all your pleading was ignored, and now look what has happened. I blame UDE, and wont buy any more of there products. (exept 20 dollar VS boxes) They failed. Lol for yugioh too, what have they got now, WOW? Epic fail. Maybe Disney will revive it now that they got Marvel.... I recruit the 5 drop Little Mermaid with a boost....give her the Atlantis affiliation....Me and my cousin still play, and like 3 to 6 ppl at the comic shop, the last tounament we did was for a box of Avengers. Sigh.
It's always good to hear of people still playing the game. If you're interested in finding more players near you or to play online, there's a bunch of people who used to post here but now post over at vssystem.org.
There is an Atlantis affiliation already, so Disney might have to do something a little different ;)
