I'm a big fan on the art in MVL on the whole, most pieces are nice examples of comic book art, and the reused cover art doesn't bother me at all. Apocalypse 8 though is just god awful. I was looking at the scans in another thread, saw the art and instantly assumed it was a low-drop. I'm not saying it's terrible art, but it just doesn't have that awe-inspiring quality I've come to expect from the Fittest.
Apocalypse 8 from MOR has singularly amazing art. It had a smug "I'm the biggest, baddest mutant around, and you know it" feel. This Apocalypse has the same feel as a view of Mini-Me from above. But this thread isn't about that kind of rant.
Although some of the pieces (like the DWF Dr. Light) may not show a straight portrait view of a character, I still quite like them compared to the head-on view on nearly every Recharge card I ever saw. VS art is a lot nicer, a lot more diverse, and a lot more dynamic, and even on its bad days is nicer (IMO) than most of the artwork that has been used on other Marvel TCGs in the past. It retains the feel of a comic panel, while looking good as a stand alone piece of work.
I can't even count the times people misspell her name on here. You'd think after years of playing with her cards or reading about her in comics people would get her name right.

Prolly they like their make-up so much that they spell it that way out of habit.
I can take some of the art, echo is tolerable but barely for me. I love the david finch moon knight and sentry. The 4 drop magneto bothers me out of the fact that it's ultimate magneto. The art has some lack of effort in it but I do like a few cards ripped from the pages.
I actually think generally, the art (on average) in this set is above normal. However, I also agree that there is a higher count of horrible art than usual.
Yeah Punisher 4 is just horrible, which is too bad since that's the version everyone is going to be using.
I actually found the original art on DeviantArt...I think he was given the specs for the previous style of cards. As it is, it's cropped so that you don't see the hilarious thugs (hacksaw?) that Punisher is fighting.
I've always seen the Marvel sets art as subpar to the DC art... so the comic book/recycled art in MVL is an improvement to me (and moreso because I haven't seen all the comic art).
I've teased Billy about the art mistakes... and his typical EAD response just tells me that I'm going to have some ammo for at least the next few months (so keep pointing them out!).
I actually love the art on Brass Grill...it makes me laugh. I think you missed the point...it's suposed to be stupid and cheesy and over the top.
From what I understand from an "inside source", Brass Grill was supposed to be Brass Knuckles with a picture of Luke Cage punching someone with the aforementioned equipment. Due to some kind of miscommunication, they actually received art with Luke Cage's grill and had to rename the card to match.
One of my favorite things in Vs. is that they had a lot of really good art. The art is my second favorite thing about Vs. right after the gameplay and representations of characters. That being said, I like that Vs. had unique art that wasn't elsewhere. As much as I love seeing art from comics in the comics themselves, the art being on the cards makes me feel that they are being lazy and just doing something I could do at home. I've made fantasy cards before, so I have used art from comics before, but if I could, I would get other people to do the art for the cards to represent the card as much as possible.
After seeing scans of cards, I am most disappointed with things like Ultimate Crystal, Ultimate Magneto, Anti-Cap as Cap, Jean Grey in her Dark Phoenix outfit on the 2-drop, Nightcrawler not as a priest on his card, House of M art on Pecking Order, Echo with the title in the background, Dark Alley with Black Panther, even though the flavor text mentions Daredevil, Shi'ar Soldier for showing the Imperial Guard, and anything else I may have missed that just completely misses the point, IMO.
Also, I generally dislike art that is done by Ken Steacy, which is amusing, since it somewhat reminds me of art I do like by other people. The lines are too thick and there are too many straight lines. Apoc is done by Steacy. 'Nuff said?
I generally like all the art I haven't seen before, although sometimes, I think a different piece might be more appropriate. Deadpool, for example, I think would have been better had it been of him shooting somebody in the head or holding his gun up to an actual person as opposed to the 4th wall. Or of him holding up his badge. One or the other. Oh well, I got more Deadpool in the set, so not all is lost, especially since the alternate art actually has Deadpool. Yay for Marvel Crossover!
If its about saving a buck on the art, I'm with it but maybe we could get more good by going even cheaper, fan art anyone, except for the approval thing its effectively free and you could just have uncommisioned boat loads to pick through...um if the game has that many fans.
As for my opinion on reused art whatever...but could we pull the cover title lettering off the picture before reprinting it...it seems a little tacky.

Exactly!!! Worse than tacky, IMO. It kinda kills the flavor for me. Like I'm playing a comic book cover instead of a character. Other than that, I think repurposed art is just fine, and in a few cases, awesome.
