Oh yeah, I know footnotes of that kind.
Although not a Discworld novel, it was in Pratchett's 'Truckers' I believe where the Nomes try to obtain a Gnu, due to their enyclopedia misspelling a certain firearm.
By all means that is impossible to translate, but still it should be forbidden to make footnotes like that.
There are some dreadful attempts to translate as well. In Men At Arms, I believe, they wonder what a 'Gonne' is. In Swedish, they have to search for a 'Juvär' - which unfortunately means 'udder', but I suppose it was the only word close enough that the translator could think of.
I just dug through piles of old books and found what must have been two of the Discworld novels I read, although I honestly have zero recollection about either of them other than that I enjoyed them immensely.
The Color of Magic (has a suitcase on the cover, so that's the one I must have been talking about earlier)
Small Gods (I don't think this is the one about the city guards judging by the back cover blurb)
...now, if we can just get Professor Pyg confirmed.

Our guesses were way off, then. Except for the bit about the Luggage, but that's the easiest part to get...
You really should read as many other books as you can though. Those tw are early ones: Pratchett just gets better and better with time.
Too bad he seems to have reached the end of the road now...
maybe it's time to start PMing people who have posted in this thread and ask if they want to join?
Quite frankly, I do not get why this wasn't full within a week...
Where as I would like to have about 20 players, I can easily run a good game with the player who have signed up so far. However, the more players who join, the better the game will be.
