It's not been clear what cards the set is up to, I believe it's XMen because some of the promo pictures had XMen set cards in them. With the PSP/PC versions, patches would surely be available. Only question is when.
My 2 main objections-
1. No DC - pretty much seals the deal for me.
It's like playing chess, with out a queen, bishops and only one rook. You're not really playing chess anymore are you? I have this awful feeling that this game will always lag a set or two behind, and since you're playing without half the cards makes it VS lite - watered down.
2. The idea that I need to "re-buy" cards i already own irks me in general.
For the people who are comparing it to Magic online - I'm completely ignorant - never played a game (irl or online) but do you only have half the card pool? And how many people bought the vdeo game and liked it so much that they went out and play irl now? I'm not asing to be a wiseguy but do you think was it a signifigant number? If that's the goal - to turn video gamers into real life card players, how many does it need to have go out and play to be consiered a success?
Now please note - I started this thread saying I'm trying to get excited about this. I WANT TO BE EXCITED OVER THIS - but I just can't find a reason I can get behind. I hope I'm wrong about it - I hope it brings in thousads of new players coming to real life events. I just don't think it will.
Actually, it is missing ALL of the DC universe stuff (DOR, DMS, DGL, DJL, DCR, DLS) and of course everything Marvel after Avengers. After all, it is called the MARVEL trading card video game.
Yeah, I know. I just said those four because they're, by far, the best sets out, to date.
I am a (semi) regular Magic Online player, and at first had a tough time with buying "fake" cards as people call them.
But then I realized that it didn't matter. Being a new father, with a job, and a family, and lots of other stuff going on, I couldn't get out to play my favorite card game on a regular basis. (By the way, VS is my favorite game.) What Magic Online gave me was a chance to play a TCG, anytime I wanted, with a game up and ready in mere seconds.
That type of convenience is worth me buying "fake" cards. I look at it as buying something I can use. So I buy packs to draft. Or join leagues. Or play the occasional pauper game.
But going back to this Konami thing. I am going to give it a try. Because I can now play VS (potentially) with anyone at anytime. A lot better than the dead VS scene in my area. I will take those "fake" cards over the unusued "real" ones sitting in my closet anyday.
If "vodo" eventually gets a draft program implemented, updates with new sets, and incorporates DC, I'm all in. For now...#### it. I'll still probably get into it.
Goop: Why yes, I would love to start playing gamma doom again. :D
I love playing Vs, and having people to play would be amazing. That being said, I believe the whole idea of buying online packs, ect is pretty dumb. I think it's actually pretty greedy on the maker's part. I think the game would have been alot better if they had made it either a game where to get the cards all you have to do is beat a series of ingame opponents. Or even a small monthly fee woudn't be bad ...
Its just not worth it this way. I mean even if they did to it one of those two ways with less then half of the cards in the game, playing constructed on it is sort of pointless. It's only saving grace would be for drafting. Infi free drafts would be the only reason I would buy the game. But if fake packs cost the same as real packs ... you my as well just draft with real packs.
From my undrestanding UDE has little to do with the game at this time. Its all up to Konami. They get the money from the online stuff. They may have to pay UDE a share though. Konami has had a bad track record when it comes to online game. Anyone play the yugioh online game. You had to pay for each game you played. I don't know the details for tournaments yet but it looks like you will have to pay to create and enter them. Friendly games seem to be free though.
Also after reading the rule book there is no draft option. Only sealed and constructed. For this game to be sucessfull they will need to add more options. DC signing off probably won't happen. Its considered a different game just with the versus engine. Also the game is named Marvel TCG. Unless they release another game called DC TCG its not happening.
From the website, there's Sealed, but no Draft.
It has all Marvel sets up to MXM.
You buy points to pay for boosters, but there are no listings of how much the points are, yet.
The bugs forum is an interesting read. I think there's always going to be a lot of bugs about weird combo interactions.
No DC, no Draft, no current sets = dead game. :(
Sad, cuz it has so much potential.
*update* On one of the forums a Konami dude mentions that more current sets are in the works, they are just having problems with the open-endedness of many cards. (understandable that that slows them down. Also explains bugs in the bugs forum.) :)
Another of the weird things from reading the forums.. it seems the video game and the card game aren't all that linked. E.g. currently, the video game guys are deciding whether the card game ban list should apply to the video game. The fact that they even question it is disturbing.
It makes me wonder if they're going by original text or OCR text, now. At least there's no Clocktower original text to worry about. :)
Meh... I think You should should be able to use the online points from booster backs to buy online packs. I mean, digital packs cost little to create/maintain, and players won't call it a money grab, because people love buying packs.
Edit: Oh... UDE Has little say? Meh... this will fail hard, I reckon.
I honestly dont see this bringing many more people into the game. I see a lot of areas, like mine, with crap support moving to playing this instead of buying cards. I love the game, but haven't spent a dime on it in some time.
No HL in my area. No shops that support tourneys. No PCQ support in the area. Hell, I might sell my real cards to afford a decent set of digital ones. At least online i will have tournaments to compete in.
I don't think i am alone... if this game is decent, i will play it, and likely ONLY play limited if i play in any real life events.
Wait, wait... That makes a HUGE difference. If Konami is in charge... Ugh... I was under the impression UDE was in charge with Konami handling the technical aspects. If Konami is making banning descisions, format decisions... That's gonna get ugly. It also means I DON'T think it's just a matter of time before DC comes in either. :( Wow, talk about a buzz kill.
