A maxim i've long since thought was absurd in one case, and huh? in the other. Uncle Ben's death is integral to Spider-Man's characterization.
Why should Bucky have to remain dead? Because Stan Lee didn't like teenaged sidekicks? There is nothing about that particular death that makes Captain America any better or worse a character. It 'marvelized' him *gave him a 'human' weakness*, but other than that it was just an arbitrary decision by Stan that no one went against. And in the easiest of plots to bring him back from the dead with no less - no body equals no death, and his body was never recovered. The only genius that Brubaker showed in bringing back Bucky was that he came up with a story that exploited that loophole AND was thouroughly plausible to explain where he'd been for 50 years.
Why should Jason Todd have to remain dead? Because DC let a phone poll (that was only won by some 40 something votes..not a landslide by any stretch) decide his fate? If they wanted to kill him they should have simply had the cast iron cajones to do it without letting FANS write their story for them. To me, and yes i was around for it, that was the shoddiest way to tell a story ever devised (until DC vs. Marvel came out). The idea of letting the fans write your comic books is an affront to me. As much as I hate Joe Q telling us he 'knows what we want more than we do', at least he's steering the ship even if i don't like where it's going. The fall down with this one is, unlike Bucky, his way of return was barely even superhero-plausible. I have no problem with giving service to the fans, it's the way you stay in business. But writing the ending to stories? To hell with that.
Very well-written post and not only because I thoroughly agree with you.
Unfortunately, just like algrim, I need to spread some rep around before giving it to you again.
I'd be fine with Dido leaving. I didn't dislike him when he arrived on the scene, but over the course of his time running DC I've liked him less and less. He just doesn't seem to "get it." With recent events like his poorly reasoned explaination for wanting to kill Nightwing (something to the effect of "He's an extra Batman, we don't need him") to Countdown, which was horrible enough on it's own, but now we've found out it didn't really lead into Final Crisis at all, to the recent departure of Chuck Dixon (which Dixon basically explained was because of Dido in his blog) as well as a slew of other head scratching statements from Dido in between, I've come to think Dido needs to go. DC is in a pretty bad slump these days. In it's third week I just officially lost interest in Trinity and I was surprisingly indifferent to Final Crisis #1. These are books by creators that I normally really enjoy and I can't help but feel that the rumors of Dido running DC like a prison camp may have a lot to do with the loss of that spark of creativity that seems to be tarnishing DC lately. I hate to place blame on just one guy and make him a target, but he's the only one at DC that I read statements from that just make me think that he has no idea what makes the DCU tick.
countdown was a big disappointment.. and with so many books tied to it, I'm surprised they didn't get rid of Didio immediately. It's time for a new voice. The old one is.. well.. it's getting OLD.
Because if death is treated as something trivial, because we know Magneto and Hal and Professor X and Barry and etc. aren't really dead, or that they'll be back from the dead soon enough, it sucks the dramatic tension right out of the storytelling.
There was a great scene in Justice League, back when, where Superman was one of the few people to show up at, um, Metamorpho's funeral. Because people either didn't believe he was really dead, or they knew he'd be back before too long. And that's a big problem with comics right there. Kyle never got a fair shake at becoming the Green Lantern for a lot of fans. And the Green Lantern, like the Flash, is one of those heroes that's designed around a legacy of heroes with the same name. And now Kyle is adrift without a storyline because some editor decided he wanted to read comics about Hal again, not 'the new kid.'
Feh. This is why I avoid major storylines and major books from the big two like the plague.

Oh, he's got some story. But is it as good as it could be? Would you like to go over how Kyle's story has progressed since we knew Hal was returning?

well....if Didio is let go then at least the deaths stalking the Titans will come to a halt! And Didio was the one responsible for messing up the Legion after DnA era stopped. Hopefully someone will come in and rescue all the team heroes - Legion, Titans, JLA, Outsiders - from the cellar and fix them as they were supposed to be - the best ones ever.
I've been enjoying DC for a long time now and every time Marvel jerked me around I always took solice in that DC didn't. It should have by all means, toying my favourite characters and putting them in uncompromising situations but it still reads well. Except um,
***SPOILER ALERT*** the martian manhunter thing, I thought that was horribly done. I thought he should have went out better than off panel.
But otherwise I generally still enjoyed what I was reading. Marvel on the other hand makes me angry...no...frusterated. I am getting sick of Marvel handling things so poorly; One More Day undermining, not reinventing, undermining spider-man and making an important event out of civil war pretty null and void. World War Hulk was disappointing on so many levels, etc.
Dan should stay, but if he goes I will still be interested in what happens next.
Joe should be fired tomorrow.

We've always been criminals.
We have to be criminals." --The Batman
For those who just hate DC for the past few years, thanks mainly to Dan DiDo.... DC's version of Joey Q, or Jim Shooter [except less successful], can finally rejoice!
There's an interesting article in io9 regarding rumors on his imminent demise. Hopefully it'll happen soon. Especially after Final Crisis.
Now if only Joe Quesada can leave Marvel, then the industry might re-invigorate a lot of readers. Although given the sales right now, it's not likely....
What do you guys think? Do you think Dan Dido is the best thing to happen to DC since....I don't remember when the last time DC had something really good happen.... Or do you think Dan Dido deserves his fate into obscurity like Bob Harras?
I think he does need to be replaced and DC should stop making year long stories that are weekly, only monthly. Quesada has done a really good job at Marvel, though there is a lot I think he has done that wasn't so good, especially changing Spiderman's reality and history. So I think Joe needs to go back to writing and drawing. (no offense to him though) I thought Bob Harras did a better job, he is probably my favorite Editor-in-Chief of all time out of Marvel, DC, or any comic company.

Writers don't have the true freedom they were promised they would have when they signed to be exclusive at DC.
Where did you get this? Grant Morrison seems to have "true freedom". His Final Crisis came out just like he wanted with no changes to reflect on Death of the New Gods and/or Countdown. Seems odd that something wrote years ago couldn't have a word ballon changed to reflect Death of the New Gods or Countdown. Rumor on Rich Johnson's Lying in the gutters is Morrison's Final Crisis wasn't what was originally sold to Dan as and Dan flew over to see Grant to try to get it to work. Thus why DCU 0 came out trying to set things up for Final Crisis. By letting Grant write whatever he wanted it created more of cluster. DCU 0 had nothing to do with Countdown.
Just because a writer has an idea doesn't mean it is for the best. Writers are human too. The reason so many people take the writer's side is because they can get their side of the story out while the company tries to take the professional route. Waid and Morrison wanted to take over the Superman titles years ago and have Brainiac undo Superman marriage but the powers that be didn't want that.
"true freedom" doesn't mean only the best things happen. If a writer decideds Batman should start killing should he have the freedom to do it since he claims it will be a great storyline?
From my point of view the powers that be let to much slide to keep Morrison happy. The New Gods are now Gods of the Hood? He already used the idea with in the Mr Miricle limited series he wrote. I wish an editor had made him work out Final Crisis 1 better. The issue by itself was about a bunch of events that seem to have nothing to do with each other.
Dan is no more getting fired than Joe at Marvel is.

Sweet I own that art page where electro Supes shows up for Metamorpho's funeral. Poor Johnny Quick and the first Atom. I think out of all the statues of the dead there at the time only they didn't make it back. Ice and Green Arrow have statues but of course are back to life.
As for the Kyle is adrift thanks to some editor? Kyle did get a fair shake. What happend sadly is his storylines started getting weak like Hal's did before Kyle took over. Kyle's crossover with Green Arrow about the aliens who were stealing what was it cleaning detergent?? The aliens could take human forms, drive cars, and speak english, and run a criminal empire but couldn't buy it legally? One of the worst storylines I had ever read. It is painful trying to remember it. Must block it out! And sadly they didn't improve afterwards. When Ron Marz came back and did the last storyarc where Kyle fought Major Force again I was like about time Kyle was cool again. But sadly that was the end for Kyle solo run in Green Lantern. Now currently Hal is being writen well and his title is "hot" kinda like when Kyle first was Green Lantern. I really was hoping Ron Marz with a good artist would write a Ion ongoing with Kyle. The limited series Ion's artwork was a turn off for me. We could start a petition to see if we can get Ron Marz to write Kyle again? Right now I am digging Hal as Green Lantern. Who knows maybe John will get another crack at being the only earth GL in the future? Its a circle. Hal wasn't selling great so Kyle got a chance. Sold great for a few years then it dropped back to prekyle sales and Hal got a chance again.
I know this subject is a little bit old, but I felt the need to chime in. Dan DiDio is one of the reasons I started reading DCcomics on a regular basis. I'm a Marvel guy, first comic I ever read was a Captain America comic, back when I was 10 years old I guess. I've been hooked on Marvel comics ever since. Having said that, Superman is favorite character. Anyway, so I've been reading comics for about 20 years, and I never really got into DC. even though Supes is my fave character. I go to the store every Wed, and come home with a nice thick stack of books that I put into a nice reading order and then I read each and every one. i probably spend on average, about 60-70 bucks a week on comics. I'm a fan. Not a fanboy. I hate that term, because a fanboy sits around like alot of the guys on Realms here and #####es incessantly about how everything sucks.
I think alot of you guys have forgotten the reason you started reading comics in the first place. For me, it's all about the core of it. Good versus evil. Right versus wrong. White hat versus black hat. It's Captain America looking Thanos in the eye as he's about to get flattened. It's the X-men protecting a world that hates and fears them. It's The Thing crushing Dr Doom's hands in his gauntlets. It's the Clone Saga, it's KnightFall, the list goes on.
I am passionate about my love for comics, and alot of you guys sound like bitter old men. Dan Didio needs to be fired. Joe Quesada needs to be fired. Whatever. Joey Q brought me back to comics, when I had kinda walked away for a bit. Dan Didio got mew to start reading DC on a regular basis. As far as I'm concerned, they can stay on the job til they die. Has every decision been great? No. I had some issues with Countdown, but I did'nt hate it. I had alot of issues with One More Day, but I LOVE Brand New Day. Spider-Man is fun for me again. Whatever, the bottom line is, if you don't like it, don't buy it. When I hear people #####ing about #### they didn't even read, it pisses me off. My advice, buy and read what you love and if you don't love it, DON'T BUY IT!! Maybe you'll learn to enjoy your comics a little more that way. Any one of you, and I myself have a better chance of being fired from our jobs than Dan DiDio or Joey Q. Nuff Said!!
There's a mass without roofs
There's a prison to fill
There's a countrys soul that reads post no bills
There's a strike and a line of cops outside of tha mill
There's a right to obey
And a right to kill
I know Joe Q is the DEVIL! but I didt'n know that Didio was also a bad seed.
I think it's that a large portion of the responsibility for the recent failures at DC and the creative stalls with it's books ultimately comes to Dido. If he's overseeing the whole line, then he's the one that is saying yes to things like Countdown (which I often hear called some of the worst comics ever) and the two-panel/off-screen death in Final Crisis that many are upset about, as well as other things that have already been mentioned in this thread. The buck stops with Dido, as they say.
I liked DiDio when he first got the job. Signed some really good writers, pushed for relaunches of Teen Titans and Outsiders, but it seems that for the past few years, he's been almost obsessed with huge crossovers.
